hello everyone, i just got a 1969 bay window bus the other day. It has a new trans-axle and engine. The seller says that the engine is new it is a 1776cc with dual EMPI carburetors. this really weird, loud sound comes from the engine, it sounds like a tin can being crushed, you can't hear it very well in this video https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9ysz1tV_vsg but it is loud. i think a rod is bent, do you guys have any ideas what it might be and how i may be able to fix it. thanks

Hard to tell in the video.
Do you have this black plastic thing under the fuel pump.

Pull the spark plug wires one at a time and see if the noise goes away. Note which wire if it does.

Good luck

That don't sound good...

Couple things to check maybe...is the starter sticking on, I've had that happen before sounds similar. Maybe the fly wheel is a bit loose. I would start by draining the oil and pull the strainer and look for metal or any material for that matter. Pull plugs and inspect, maybe one broke and is floating around in the jug F-ing things up. After checking the fuel pump as Tcash suggested I would sync the carbs. Possible engine pull in your future.

What does it sound off idle, around 1500 rpm's? Does the noise increase with engine rpm or steady? even off idle? what about on acceleration, does it pop? backfire? fall on its face? get back to us, more info

The noise occurs more often at a high rpm also, the engine seems to have low power, and takes about a minute to start but i think this is an issue with the carbs as we are still working to adjust & sync them.

That's ok then. They used the old mechanical pump to block off the hole. It is doing nothing.

Drop the oil sump. If there are metal shavings in it. The motor has to come out.

It definitely sound metallic. Pull the wires as suggested. If they used a bolt on cam gear a bolt head may be hitting the oil pump.

Good Luck

Have you tried removing the belt to make sure it's not something stuck in the fan? It's a long shot, but it's common. (Also, is your belt on backwards in the pic?)

Next up, remove the oil filler cap at idle and listen in. You can hear a surprising amount of detail of what's going on in there if you concentrate. In a clean environment, I have also run engines for a few seconds with the valve covers off for diagnosis.

Good luck,
Robbie

Probably a bent push rod tube. Many threads on how to fix that here.

Get a $3 stethoscope or piece of hose and listen around, Stay away from the belt. That noise has a high pitch to it so it will be directional.

It's very possible. YOU are the only one with the engine in front of you, so YOU have to make the call. Let the engine cool, then get it to idle and feel the pushrod tube with your hand. You'll get very quick tactile feedback if that is the issue.
