Hi, New Westfalia owner here and first time poster.....picked up a 1990 one owner van last week, searched for months and found a real nice example 15 min from my house!....anyway have been spending the past week going over the vehicle and getting familiar with it. I have a service manual on order but hasn't arrived yet so here goes my 1st question...What is the slotted disc in this picture?...it appears the motor has a oil leak coming from this part and was wondering what it is and if its a easy fix like a rubber O ring or gasket.....any info appreciated!....Kevin

welcome.

Like stated it's the oil pressure relief valve.

Inside there is a spring so it's on tension. It's not a soft O-ring but a metal ring.

You will have to remove this one and if I remember right you will loose oil.

Dry it with brake cleaner, go buy a product called "The Right Stuff"

Put some on thread and let it dry for a day before putting oil back

It will NEVER leak again

Trust me

Ben

I would drive it for a while and be sure it is not something above leaking down before messing with it. You have a very clean looking engine. Perhaps the seller steam cleaned the engine before putting it up on the market. There is a large o ring on the oil cooler that is above that point, and that's also to the rear of several common leaks where airflow on the road would deposit it. Dry it off and above it, and drive for a bit before concluding that the lowest point on the engine is also the source of an oil leak.

Could be the sealing ring on the oil pressure relief threaded plug...they really don't leak very often. If you are going to replace the sealing ring, install a new pressure relief spring too. Part number for the spring 021.115.421B..$5.50 and the sealing ring N.013.829.3 $1.78 from Van Cafe. Your old spring is probably original. There is a spec for the length of the spring..the springs are always partially collapsed after a couple of decades. Cheap enough parts and may help with oil pressure issues in the future.

A more probable suspect for your oil leak is the oil pressure warning switch just above the oil pressure relief plug and the oil cooler gasket. There is a blind plug inserted into the engine case up there too. Those blind case plugs will leak. Clean the plug area with brake clean and use JB Weld over the plug if that is your problem. The blind plug is concealed by the rear engine support and is just below the threaded boss in the engine case.

Here is a picture of your oil leak area..the blind plug, the oil pressure switch and oil cooler gasket area.

Drag link socket works well for install/removal.

I would just try and tighten what you have before going on a buying spree. I just have a large diameter hardened washer I ground down the fit the slot and use a pair of vicegrips to turn it. Crude but effective.

Looks like someone may have tried to tighten yours with a punch.

Welding or brazing a nut to the plug is another solution. I don't think you need to drain the oil from the engine when removing the plug, others may know better.

I have an oil leak that looks just like this one.
Mine was not tight at all when I put a screwdriver to it.
Do you need to drain the oil for this?
How did the OPs come out?
So many questions...

Don't need to drain the oil..some oil will come out when you/if you remove the slotted threaded plug. About a cup.

If the plug is loose..then surely tighten it and order the sealing washer and just for laughs..a new spring. Wildthings suggestion using a large washer ground down to a flat on one edge and vise-grips is a good idea.

Thanks Atlas , it was not so much loose as just barely snug. I was sure it was leaking but I cranked it down then cleaned the area with brake cleaner and took it around the block.

Crawled under and it was bone dry. However you can see nice little droplet forming nearby....
Any idea where that one might be coming from?
The aforementioned oil pressure sensor?

Very well could be the oil pressure switch..look at the switch from up top with a flashlight..when they leak they are wet with oil.
