Hi all, first time posting on here. I finally got my Ghia after bugging the owner on a yearly basis for the past 16 years and can't stop driving her.
I really want to swap out the bumpers that came on it and was wondering if anyone knows of a set of original bumpers for a 1960 Ghia, or if you recommend getting a stainless set.
Thanks in advance! |

If you do go there, I recommend only viewing the last 4-5 pages, otherwise you will spend your entire Thanksgiving day weekend trying to read everything!!

That complete set in the classifieds may have great potential. Get them rechromed and it will likely be the better outcome.
To determine what rubbers, nuts and bolts you need.... get the parts book and look at Illustration#6 on page 492 of 798. Note the numbers and look for them in the subsequent pages. You can search the better suppliers with the part number The parts with numbers beginning with "N" are generic VW parts. The parts begining 141 (or 142, 143 or 144) are Karmann Ghia.
The sticky "Karmann Ghia Buyer's & Parts Shopping Guide" lists suppliers that make the tines, tine covers and the various rubbers and bushings that are likely perished, missing or not worth fixing in whatever you end up buying. even off you go down the stainless bumper wormhole, you will need many of the minor parts

Bumpers are a significant expense and probably why modern cars use moulded plastic over strength members. But you've recognised for a classic they are part of the overall look and appeal. They assemble like a mechano set and so are fun project.

Thanks for the info! I'll check into those classified bumpers and start pricing out a rechrome. |

Careful- these in the ad are for '67 thru '69 Ghias. This bumper will fit your '60 and look suitable, but you have 2 big differences to an original one for '60 thru '66: Each "L" blade has a depression and hole for mounting the reversing light. Also, the length of the L blade along the side will be slightly shorter than for a '60 because the wheelwell shape as of '67 came back slightly farther. The blades were shortened accordingly. |
