What tool would a person use to clean up the threads of an exhaust stud? I've got one that has a rough spot, but of course there isn't enough space for a standard die to fit in there. _________________ Brian Z

I'd use a thread file. They sell them in different sizes to match the thread pitch. _________________ Contact me at [email protected]

You can also make your own 'cutting oil mix' with engine oil and pb blaster
and use a brand new nut or 2 as a die and go slowly through the damaged
threads back and forth until the bad threads are cleaned up.
Coat the stud with the mix and continue to do so as you move upward
as I assume the head is still on the engine. _________________ V.W.owner since 1967 |

Thread file if it's real bad, as Bill said. I spent an hour with a die on an exhaust stud once. Nicest stud I've seen to date, you're welcome Robbie.
And yes, definitely agree on making some oil. _________________ Wash your hands

I have used a small triangular file to cut a slot in the threads of a new nut and used that to clean up the threads on a stud. The rust from the stud collects in the slot and prevents galling. You have to use some lubricant, turn it back and forth, go only a bit at a time, and clean out the groove with a small wire brush. Tedious, but it works well and doesn't damage the stud or try to start new threads like a die might.

Or, double nut the stud if it's really bad. Unscrew the stud from the head and install a new one. _________________ Contact me at [email protected]

Or make one out of a nut. File a groove in the nut and run a tap through it to clean up the threads. Then use the nut to chase the threads.
This is a bolt, but will give you the idea.

Good luck

Um, you spent an hour and a half on that exhaust stud.

Pretty hard to use a thread file if the damage is not visible on the stud and usually this would happen when pulling the F-pipe or heat exchanger off
Unless you have a thread file that goes around the stud like a rubber band. _________________ V.W.owner since 1967 |

I vote for replacing the stud if you can get it out all the way. Might not be able to unthread all the way out if it's the 40mm long version behind the J pipe. If in the back no problem with the header pipes off. |
