I know who that is, a really good guy and will let him out himself.
Link has been texted.
Awesome of the Jeep to help (!!!), but early on they should have been way further towards the uphill side. Scary! _________________ If ever twice as rich, we’re gettin’ a double-wide

Steepness is difficult to convey in 2D video.
That rescue Jeep needs a front locker.
Markswagen if you edit the title to "

The “Who” has been contacted.
Yes, that entire scene was far creepier than the video can relay! _________________ If ever twice as rich, we’re gettin’ a double-wide

I had an extraction pro who was also skeptical about using the RMW tow points. I said the same thing: "I've seen a Vanagon hanging from these hoops."He said roughly the same thing: "The owner wants to use these tow points."
Bummer about the axle flange. _________________ - Jim

That had to be “The Moment”… it just couldn’t be easy!
Probably a ridiculous question… but real…
Could it (a 2WD) be limped out if having a Peloquin? _________________ If ever twice as rich, we’re gettin’ a double-wide

It is a 2WD, looking how far he went , he must have either a locker or a Peloquin in there, or both. The Peloquin alone won't let you move the van if one axle is broken, only a locker will.
With a broken axle, you can prolly lock the output flange granted you have some sort of flat stock and a drill on hand, that'll do like a locker in theory (right? ) but with a broken output, it was game over without a locker. _________________ Silicone Steering Boots and 930 Cv boots for sale in the classifieds.

I think its a Subadiff.
Is Subadiff another Eaton Truetrac style with planetary worms? (Like Peloquin?) _________________

Yep, that was me hanging out with the Syncro kids. I think I would have been able to do this climb until this happened.
Aaron who was behind me saw a bit of smoke from the back of the van. I had rolled back to the left side of the road and put it up against the embankment on the drivers side so it couldn't roll any further. I did look under from the passenger side and didn't see the broken axle. Also, I was able to get it going a bit from brakes on but it would quickly stop. I thought I could smell something burnt which is why we thought perhaps the clutch was burnt or slipping. I think when I would try to start from having the brakes on, the lsd would grab but as soon as I was fully off the brake, it would not move.
I was with an awesome group, Arron and Erin, Matt, and Catherine and Chris.
The break actually happened lower that the switchback where the recovery took place. Arron pulled me up to the switchback, then Matt tried to get me up the hill to no avail, just not enough traction on the loose stuff to pull a Westy up. I rolled back down to the switchback and parked it. Andrew in Moab who has a very cool Volvo C303 met us in town. He, Matt, and I returned to the van but by then it was raining and there was even less traction. I caught a ride back to town with Andrew and grabbed a hotel room for the evening. First thing in the morning I called Trailmater Off Road Recovery. A passing jeep had said they often give a discount if you let them make a YouTube video. Mike and Shawn picked me up at 9am and had me by the highway at 1pm.
From there, it was a 85 mile AAA flatbed to Aaron's house in Grand Junction.
They have a great shop with a lift.
Erin and Aaron were super gracious. They put me up in their guest room and even provided a pup to keep me company.
I had to catch a fight in two days and parts weren't available in Grand Junction so I grabbed a rental to drive home and to the airport in Denver.
I returned on two trips and Aaron helped me install a new clutch, stub axles and seals.
Finished up on Thursday and drove back out to Moab to hang with some friends.
Also on this trip, both of my front shocks failed. They were the first gen T3 shock for lifted 2wd vans. Chris promptly sent out a replacement set.
Todd at Subarugears also has sent out a set of replacement axles that are the latest version. I had bought these in 2017 and they have since changed how they make these.
Now that the van is back in action, should I give it a little test run?

Given how many Vanagons visit Moab, I'm surprised it took this long to finally see one on Trailmater's channel.

That's Rory Irish's business: Off-road recovery, primarily, in and around the Moab area. Since he was on his honeymoon, his two sidekicks did this recovery, as they often do. Should've taken one of the trucks for this one, but the Jeep ultimately handled it fine.

It does. At 5:27, Mike reminds Shawn to engage the lockers.

Onion Creek Road is approx. 8 miles, give or take, to the fork in the road, where 4WD is, according to my Moab recreation map, then required. _________________ 1986 Cabriolet: www.Cabby-Info.com

I decided to pull the trans and do the clutch since I had time and Aaron was willing to help. The clutch was actually ok, maybe at half life. The pressure plate had some hot spots. But for the broken axle, I would have been ok. The front shocks were a pain since they were essentially not there. Had pogo action on the front.
I’ve driven a few roads designated 4wd. Often it’s more a matter of clearance and probably the choice of lines. Aaron and Matt have traveled this route before and felt it was fine with a lifted 2wd. The lsd has been great and I can tell when it’s working. We had already done much more challenging stuff before the axle failure. _________________ '84 Westy, '93 Subaru ej22 and Subarugears 5speed

I'm sorry for your troubles--we definitely missed you in Crestone--but what a great story and a cool video to boot!
For anybody doubting the capability of Carl's 2wd van, I've seen it do some serious work in Moab--as much a reflection of the pilot as the van. _________________ Joe T.

OK you know I love a good whodunnit.
Axle rotates one full turn every 7 feet. Bending forces on the spindle at suspension bottomout would likely show a definite “crack-start” location/direction.
Ain’t seeing a “first crack”. Can you post a better closeup pic?
Unless successive bottomouts started surface-cracks at the spline ends, evenly all around, over time. Then pure torque finished it off?
Maybe the CV doesn’t bottomout though. Maybe it just binds a little at the max angles, the spindle accumulating fatigue cycles.
OK just a sec, if ANYTHING is happening at the max ends of the CV angle, I bet it would crack the CV cages. —->Which you didn’t report. Did you happen to inspect the cages? _________________
