Supposively, they are brazillian. I always thought they were Austrailian. They're gravel guards for a bug, front and rear. Always liked them but never get my hands on em'. Maybe at the Classic. _________________ http://www.thesamba.com/vw/forum/viewtopic.php?t=355803 |

I just need the fronts, I have 2 sets of tall rears. One on my Split, the other with the rest of my "to be used" accessories. I'll trade them for a set of front ones. |

I'll take your word on that Skim, but Brazilian.............???
That's not what I'm looking for, I must be thinking of something else that looks the same. I'm looking for thick aluminum ones to match the ones on the Split. .
I thought I had a full set in my stash, but when I checked I only had another set of rears |

Yep probably right. I know the ones with the point are brazillian and they are really thin and only $15 a pair. I would always add the rubber around the edge myself.
Since my split came from sweden, it also had the same gravel guards as yours in the rear and those are heavy chrome or stainless steel not aluminum. Thats all i can tell you about them. I havent really seen any heavy style front gravel guards except those Robri thick aluminum ones. _________________ GFK

Sweden at the time (1950-1954) was the largest importer of beetles. Outside of Germany, that was where the majority of them went to. The beetle was economical and basically all most of them could afford so they sold like hotcakes.
I have noticed that alot of the ones for sale on this site are from Sweden. I bought mine from Magnus Wiksten from Sweden. He told me he sent 12 splits to the US before mine. I also know that Mbugz60 52 crotch cooler split and Edubs 51 crotch cooler came over from Sweden too. Swedens climate from what Im told isnt as harsh as the rest of europe so they are still there to be found. _________________ GFK

Another interesting little side note about Swedish beetles: Sweden did not get their allotment of cars in 1950, so VW sent twice the amount of '51s You almost never see a '50 car out of Sweden but almost every '51 you find came from there. Every other country got short-changed of '51s to make up for the problem in 1950. |

Yes, that was very interesting. I´m from Sweden and since I have never heard about it before I had to check myself.
According to "Folkvagnen" nr.93 2003, a swedish magasine from "Volkswagenhistoriska Klubben" :
1948. 19177 were made in Germany. 56 were imported to Sweden.
1949. 46633 / ca.450
1950. 81917 / 9344
1951. 93358 / 6029
1952. 114372 / 5850
Theese numbers tells another story....
According to the same magasine, the first Beetle exported to the USA was in 1949, 8 january from the Netherlands. Is that correct ?

I completely agree with Pigge's numbers for production but the delivery figures were not the same. I will check the story out with Theo Svedberg who brought the story to the attention of VVWCA president Steve Herron several years ago. An interesting reference and some fun research lies ahead. |

I can of course be wrong, I´ve only written down what was said in that magasine. Wich by the way was from 2001, not 2003.... I´m looking forward to read about the results of your research.
