The front flairs mount to the body not the door, right? _________________ Steve

The front flares do mount to the door, at least the forward part. That is actually the point of them, to protect the fender from getting wet, thus saving the occupants pants. In fact, they are based off the original "Pants Savers" used by the German Post for their vans. It is why the front flares are in two parts.
From the Terrawagen site: "* Front flares mount to underside of door. This design keeps the van's fender covered and free from mud and debris. Your white pants will thank you!" https://www.terrawagen.com/products/vanagon-transporter-fender-flare-kit _________________ 1988 Tintop Wolfsburg Special Edition - "Meatloaf"

Still waiting to hear how much further out the flares go beyond the stock metal fender edges of the bus...

It's not that much, but I'll have to measure when I get home. The slider makes it past the rear one without problem. _________________ 1988 Tintop Wolfsburg Special Edition - "Meatloaf"

Hopefully these help. Ultimately, the flares only stick out about the thickness of the material beyond the factory flares.

I am SORRY guys... to give the wrong info.
I installed mine years ago... I didn't read the question well... and I think I am getting old too soon ...
Yes... the upper part of the fender flare is screwed on the bottom of the door.

Just an FYI that although Terrawagen says their fender flares are not compatible with SA mud flaps, they can be made to work.

I'm so glad this thread came up: I too have a white Westy and it always seemed like something was missing on the fenders, and wouldn't it be cool if there was a flare kit or something... Thanks! Just ordered a set. _________________ John G. - 1987 Westy 2.1 5-Speed |
