Well, aren't you the craftman! That looks pretty damn nice.
I'm glad to see that I'm not the only one who feels ISP's rack is too short. But I think yours looks a little long! My preference would be for it to end at the front support, about where the vent window starts.
But yours looks as good as those others for sale. _________________ Everything known to man has been written.

That is really nice for home made....I think it looks good being long like you have it... I have seen a 67 square that had a Volvo rack on it before, it looked good. |

Well, I made it so long because my wife & I have a '67 Schwinn Twinn tandem bicycle we like to take with us to weekend shows (the bike is 7 feet long - same length as the rack. I figured with the mesh visor on the car I could afford to make it a little longer and still have it look OK. _________________ OGST

So far, of all the racks I've seen for a squareback, this one is my favorite. I may have to follow suit and bend one up for mine. Great work! _________________ '71 Squareback - daily driver w/o brakes (not anymore, pan is starting to sag too much!)

I like the look of the rack, seems to fit with the look you've been going for. I really like the early bumpers with the trailer hitch and white wall tires. seems to all go together with the mesh sun visor. It's all tied together nicely. Good job.
P.S. I wouldn't mine some dimesions, if you don't mind sharing. _________________ Bob 65 Notch S with Sunroof

I'd like some dimensions too. When I get them, I'll try to put them in autocad and post them so everyone can get at them. _________________ '71 Squareback - daily driver w/o brakes (not anymore, pan is starting to sag too much!)

Actually, fellas, I'm one step ahead of you. I've been working on the AutoCAD plans for the rack, and I'm writing a tutorial with step-by-step instructions for Type3talk.com. I'll let everyone know when I finish it.
Bobnotch - thanks for noticing that I'm putting together a "look" for my car. Most people just ask "what's with all the accessories" and don't see the whole car. _________________ OGST

OK, OK, everyone can stop emailing me now. I'm not in the business of building racks and I'm getting tired of typing the same response to everyone. Here's a cut-n-paste of the last email I sent out:
Everything to make the rack is available at a local home improvement store like Lowe's, and was made with simple tools. The frame is constructed from 1/2" thin-wall galvanized electrical metal conduit (EMT). All the tight bends were made with a $20 pipe bender, while the top contours were bent around a big tree here in my backyard. The assembled frame, even though it is galvanized, was then sprayed silver for a nice, uniform finish. The wood slats are milled Douglas fir 1x3's finished with a light colored sealing stain and 3 coats of polyurethane(although mahogany would look nicer and white oak would be more durable, the fir was much less expensive and already milled). Everything is bolted together with 2" 10-24 stainless steel machine screws and locknuts (the rack could be welded, but the screws allow for easy disassembly for shipping and storage). The clips to hold it to the gutter are J-clips I found in my garage, although I'm sure any hardware will have something similar. If not, you could make your own out of flat aluminum or steel stock. The whole thing cost about $100. Don't let the seemingly flimsy materials fool you. Once assembled, the rack is very sturdy and tight and can hold a properly distributed load of about 250 pounds. I'm getting a huge response from this project, so I'll be writing a tutorial complete with photos and diagrams on how to build the rack (including how to make it shorter, if desired) for Type3talk.com. It should be out next week sometime (I'll get some free time this weekend).

Thank you everyone for the interest in the rack. If anyone else out there builds one I'd like to see photos - this is truly a unique accessory that can be improved upon and custom tailored to fit a specific application. _________________ OGST

Hey, You did something most people would not have done... Now that it has been done everyone wants to copy(including me)
I'm down to make my own rack $100.00 VS $300.00
I'll make mine and get some pictures for you. |

Why doesn't anyone mention the factory roof rack. Are they that rare? |

Do you mean this one. I think it looks kind of gay to be honest. And it outs the loaded weight right on your roof. I guess if you wanted your roof to look like a pool after a while I would go with it. _________________ Frank

I've never liked the look of the original accessory rack either. I prefer the wood slat racks myself. _________________ OGST

It wasn't going on my Roadster. I thought I might modify it a little and put it on my wife's Fastback though, or even on my Notch.

Yeah your 71 looks good. Some people just don't understand it when you go modifying things with "stock" parts, or using period correct accessories. _________________ Bob 65 Notch S with Sunroof

Here is a pic of the full slat that Tom Conner made for the 62. This is what she looked like right before she went into the shop. Now she has a white top!

It sits a little high for me. We picked him because on his site his racks sit closer to the roof line. Not these babys. They look more like a Westy rack. All high!! _________________ Frank
