Hi all
I just moved to the Pittsburgh area from Northern Va. Among recent problems with my 87 Vanagon the major problem is an oil leak which covers my rear hatch with oil. I haven't a clue who in this area works on Vanagons. Does anyone know of capable Vanagon Mechanics in the Pittsburgh area? Your help would be greatly appreciated !!

Nik

Between Bays and Vanagons, I have had several leaks that showed up as splotches on the rear hatch.

my leak totally covers the rear hatch but the oil level doesn't go down that much. It must be a small leak that is exaggerated at highway speeds. I have had everything tightened that might be the cause with no luck. Unfortunately I moved to the pittsburgh area before the leak was found, Hopefully I can find someone in the Pit area that fixes Vanagons. The search continues

Had a couple of very minor leaks that primarily showed up at high speeds and in a thousand miles ended up with the back hatch on my 83 1/2 POS looking like this. Probably just a couple of ounces of oil is all that leaked. Part of the oil came from the drain plug gasket and part from a rock hard distributor o-ring.

To help ID the leak at least, do this even if you don't plan on fixing it yourself-
[1] Wash engine off somewhere carefully, Car Wash, Driveway etc- Let it dry
[2] Buy small Bottle of Engine Oil Leak Detection Dye and Black Light Kit along with UV safe glasses if they aren't in the kit as well, add Dye to the engine oil
[3] Drive a short distance at a time and inspect the engine once you're parked in a safe location, using Black Light and glasses goggles- The oil leaking out will be bright under the Black Light and much easier to spot.
Avoid Highway speeds unless you really need to be on the highway, since airflow can distort where the oil is leaking from and blow it around. This could lengthen your diagnostic time tracking down the leak or leaks as the case might be.

Hey Man- welcome to Pittsburgh!
We have a well established Pittsburgh vanagon club- check it out and follow along on the Facebook page "Pittsburgh Vanagon Club".

PM me, we have a core group of individuals that meets up every week, and we'd be glad to take a look and give a bit of advice.

As far as good local shops go:
Foreign Traffic on rt8 does great work on vanagons
Colliers on rt8 has been dealing with my fleet of vanagon for a little bit now, so they're at least capable.
