|
|
| So I just picked up the oldest beetle that I have ever owned and so now its time to learn about it. Not planning on tearing it apart yet and I know down the road I'll have a ton of questions. First one is how does one lock the doors on this model? I looked through the owners manual posted here and could not find it. And second is a curious thing and I'm curious if its a factory thing or a PO thing. only the passenger door has a arm rest. The drivers door does not have one nor does it have holes where one might of been. I think it's safe to assume that VW did this on purpose, it even says in the manual to keep both hands on the wheel. As always, thanks in advance. |

One armrest, for the passenger, is correct. Oval window Bugs only came with one sun visor too, for the driver. Your passenger side door locks by pushing the inside handle forward. It cannot be unlocked from the outside. The drivers door locks with a key outside. It cannot be locked from the inside. With the exception of a '79 convertible I briefly owned, 1964 has been the newest Beetle for me. _________________

The buggy in my avatar is based on an August '63 chassis, that's my '64 VW. I looked at a red '64 Bug for sale, couldn't get to an agreeable price, that was another August '63 build. The early ones are cool, because they look like a '63 with the small license plate light and earlier peanut front turn signals. Here is a dash shot of that Bug.

So far everything on this bug looks to be original. Very excited to get my hands on it.

I spent 4 years restoring my 63 and when it came time to put the interior back together I was able to find one armrest so I tore my garage apart looking for the other one finally gave up and figured I was going have to buy one. Then later at some point I was going through an old Clymer repair manual that I have and was reading the differences between the years and it said in 1960 a passenger side armrest was added. That's when I figured out why I couldn't find the damn thing, fortunately that was before I bought one and poked holes for it in my new door panel.
I'm not sure when they added the drivers side the manual only went to 64 and there still wasn't a driver side armrest listed. |

Typical auto productions dates start Aug 1 (63) End July 31 (64) .
Looks like an early 64 steel sliding sunroof Deluxe. .. Nice. ..
Ah..wait a minute....... this was the 400 dollar car..

Peanut front turns and the non flared press deck lid with small license lamp and twist latch would be correct for that early 64 era.
Wheels should be solid not vented..
Drivers inside door pull handles (arm rest) were added for 1967 model year. _________________ aka Ken {o\!/o}

| @volkswagnut, yep the very one. I got it stored in my building on the second floor for now. I’m busy finishing up my 73 bay. I told my wife no more projects, but I truly love an old beat up bug. Supper thrilled to get on it. I can now say from experience that bugs are easier than buses and for the most part cheaper. So I noticed that you said it should not have slotted wheels, that’s music to my ears, I love the smoothies. And I got three of them with extra parts. |

| My 64 has the exterior locks on both handles. So to lock or unlock any door its just push the handle towards the front of the car. And to close the door if locked from the inside you have to hold the door handle button down until it latches all the way, and then let go. It has some sort of anti-lockout so that its harder to accidentally lock yourself out |

I've got that same white Beetle (minus a few dents and dings).
64 with factory sunroof.
This was the first year they put in (steel) sunroofs.
64 is a one year only car. _________________ www.vwnos.com [email protected]

The first year VW beetles had a sunroof was 1938. New for 64 was the steel sliding sunroof. The 1200"A" model ( former Standard ) continued with the ragtop sunroof until at least to 1967.
Australia, and down under cars, Brazil and Mexico used the 58- 64 body with steel sunroof option to 1967. |

I found my bugs home. I had noticed this dealer decal since I first got this bug, but didn’t really pay it much attention. Yesterday I decided to do a search of the name of the dealer. Of all places I found this picture right here on thesamba. The PO had told me the car belonged to his aunt that lived in NJ. So it’s most likely the dealer that sold this car originally. Now it’s here with me in Kentucky. I’d buy that story.
