I might be installing a rebuilt 2.2l to replace my tired 2.1l. The 2.2 comes from a van with manual transmission. My van has automatic transmission. Is there anything that I need to do to the engine as it moves from manual to auto where it joins the transaxle?

On a side note, on my phone transaxle autocorrects to twaddle.

Depending upon whether or not it has been rebuilt and by whom, you may have the extremely rare Weddle twaddle.

you will need to remove the flywheel from the engine and install your flexplate. you will need to get 5 new bolts, do not reuse the bolts. i believe the pilot bearing can stay in the crankshaft so no need to wrestle with that.

while you have access to the main seal, i would replace it. and since the engine is out, i would remove the pulley and replace the rear seal as well... ounce of prevention...

No reason not to reuse the bolts. They are torqued to spec, not torque to yield.

I believe the two lower engine mounting studs at the bellhousing end are longer on the automatic transmission, so you will want to transfer those to the replacement engine. Flywheel crank bolts are a different length than the flexplate crank ones, so you will need to pay attention to that. Throttle cable connects differently, so you may need to address that too.

Going from a flywheel to a flex plate, you should also address the endplay. Measure the endplay before removing the flywheel on the new engine and save that number somewhere safe.

Install the flex plate using the same shim stack and remeasure endplay. If you are lucky, no change is required. If not, you will need to reshim. Possibly your shim stack from the old engine, might have what you need.

While you are sorting out the endplay, it is better to use the old flexplate crankshaft bolts since you may be coming off and on a couple times. Final assembly, new bolts is a good recommendation.

Good on you. Collective wisdom, not just my own experience justify my statement. These are relatively low torque fasteners that can be reused MANY times. Just like the head studs/nuts.. unlike every other modern engine with TTY fasteners.

Your results won’t vary

No one talk about the most important thing when swapping from auto-stick or the opposite.

Check the "End Play" of the crankshaft, you may need to add or remove a shim.

You also want to: Change the torque converter seal, the flex plate inner seal the crankshaft seal

You CAN reuse the TC Plate bolt

Purist? That's funny. I've never once threatened or attempted to intimidate anyone regarding my opinions. I've always stated that my opinions are subjective and entirely philosophical. Nobody is in anyway required to sublimate themselves to my personal design aesthetic. I merely state an opinion, the same as anyone else here. You on the other hand have taken intimidation to the next level.

All I did here for so many years is help people, all you did is being a... you know what. Mr Purist.

No open mind at all, just bashing everything that was not.. pure. Not VW.

Everett and the team never warned me or ban me. They have better thing to do.

Where is your website about helping VW folks? I have 10,000 picture on mine all free of charge.

I came back with hope to see what was happening here, ,but I will leave again because of people like you.

The Samba is a great place but your messing everything and you are good at it.

Very sad indeed.

For the new people here, , my website is: www.benplace.com
It's full of free information about mostly Vanagon

So sorry, I am leaving again because of that dumb ass

Ben
