The right side Chrome Ring Mounting tab for the screw is stripped.
I find it hard to imagine that the thin piece of metal had many threads to begin with. I would appreciate any suggestions on how to repair this.

Larger-thread sheet metal screw?

Can you please post a good close up of that area (I don't feel like pulling off one of my headlight rings to look)?

Because maybe a rivet nut, clip nut, or similar could work.

Threaded a piece of metal and a bit of JBWeld hopefully will hold it in place. I know I should have welded it... but we are in the season of bitter cold, and welding indoors isn't healthy or safe... It'll do. And if it doesn't hold, I can always re-visit it in the summertime.

Thomas is out in the garage busy building his car so I thought I'd grab this from his thread as one idea. Here is the link as well. https://www.thesamba.com/vw/forum/viewtopic.php?t=...;start=200

One of my screws is stripped out too so I am curious to see what solutions people have tried.

I was able to attach the Chrome Headlight Ring using a 10-24 U-Nut, and the results are excellent. The attached photos is the hardware I used.

I went with the 10-24 u-nut and 10-24x2” screw because I wasn’t able to find the hardware in metric. The original screw is an M5 x 50mm.
The picture of the screw and clip are how I oriented the clip when I attached it to the metal tab.

I"ve had luck on this tab and similar ones by using a punch -- I place the tip anout 3/4 on the metal and 1/4 of dia over the hole and hammer the punch -- working my way around the dia of the hole.

I started on the back face and repeated on the front face. This made the hole a bit smaller.

Then used a tap to re-tap/clean the threads. Then put antiseize. This repair has held for several years (did this about 10yrs ago) on my 71.

To the OP, if you get pinged on this thread, can you tell me the source for U-Nut and screw?

Many thanks if you see this.
