The cromax product uses an “activator/reducer” le3075 mixed 1 part to 4 parts surfacer. The surfacer was shaken on a paint shaker too… but the urethane reducer I used to strip it off came up with an amber like resin. My assumption is the activator reducer was past shelf life.

My assumption is that your assumption is correct, then. When it goes amber or yellow, it's done.

Some more jamming was done with some PPG Shopline JBP and JC60 Clear.

You can see a color difference between the PPG Shopline I had a gallon mixed of and the prior paint was a mix of Cromax Pro waterbase and Spies Hecker waterbase that my prior rep advised me what toners were interchangeable. I remember my theory being I would use the Cromax color to Jamb the areas that would otherwise not be seen, and save the color the outside would be on jambs like the doors, hood and trunk that would be seen. Red is hard to match as it is, and I skipped sealing these panels and it took three coats to cover Surprised I actually plan to Seal the car white to hopefully lighten up the Red when I spray the whole car.

Even sprayed up some diecast's! The one on the left is a newer matchbox and the one on the right is a Lesney original I sprayed the first batch of jamming.

Now with the car back together, we can have a block party!

I am excited to share the car has been painted!

The car was masked up nice and tight!

After that, the decision was made to use epoxy primer on all burn through's.

I then took a 1000 grit sanding sponge to the whole car, wiped it down again, tacked it off and sealed it in white. My theory in believing it would lighten up the color wasn't right, but hey, its sealed anyhow!

The Red over the white sealer was tricky. The first coat was very transparent and I decided to do three coats in total to achieve hiding and gain consistency anyhow. I had three coats on the jambs without sealer. Id be interested to see if it made a difference at all once unmasked. The Product was PPG Shopline.

Then 4 coats of JC630 Clear coat was applied! I put the "Sun Gun" on it to show how the color would pop in sunlight! I plan to cut and buff the car!

That's a beautiful looking Fastback. Is that a Black Cherry color? How about some outside in the sun shots?

Hey Bob! It is L 650 Granada Red a Type 3 color from 66-68. Still currently wrapped up in the booth. Plan to do a cut and buff! I look forward to seeing it outside too!

That looks too dark to be Granada, but it does look nice! Also, congrats! You've done more work than 95% of the people on this forum will ever do to their Type 3. Cool

I appreciate the compliment! Yeah Im not certain how close it is to true Granada Red as Ive never seen it in person. When we used Axalta, we had some toners that were frozen from both Cromax Pro and Spies Hecker waterbased. My rep at the time said they were interchangable and good enough to use for jambing so i mixed some and thats what I did.

My PPG rep when he mixed the color in Shopline said it was JB Leaded which is discontinued. He was able to work around it with alternative toners but it was a lot darker than what was sprayed prior with the Axalta concoction. Again my assumption that the white sealer would lighten it up was wrong but it is what it is. I like the color!

Yeah, I've run into that before on my son's Civic. We sprayed the car after it had spun into a ditch one winter. We used PPG paint on it, and it matched 100%. Then the same car got hit by a deer, so to save some money he went with Axalta paint and the color is off. It's not a big deal, as he's cutting the rear wheel well lips for rust repair and plans to repaint the car later. He plans to use the Axalta paint as a base, then some of the PPG paint to re-cover the car, as he likes the color of it. The big issue is the Axalta paint seems darker than the PPG paint. The PPG paint has a lot of pearl in it which causes the price to go up.

I too like the color of your car, which is why I asked if it was a black cherry color, as it seems a little dark for a stock VW color.

It may be lighter than it looks because of lighting, camera and monitor.

Yeah, I thought of that too. When I painted my 64 T-34, I played hell in trying to get the color to match both sides, as a little bit of extra light would cause it to change. It was Sea Blue #2, and it would flip flop in different light between green and purple. Shocked
