Started to prepare to install my rear window. I have the American type rubber to fit a 'C" molding on my 59 ghia. I am having trouble trying to figure out how to get the seal on around the window and have it stay in place so I can get it in place. Never attempted this before. I'm assuming the window glass fits into the shallowest/widest groove in the rubber, but it doesn't stay in place when pushing it on. I get a few inches in the slot and it just falls out. Any advice or pictueres? |

It'll be a PITA but, start by installing the seal onto the corners of the glass, then work the seal down onto the flats, install the trim, then get a Bic pen, remove the ends, slip it over the cord that you intend to use feed the end with about 6"-8" of cord hanging out of the end into the sealing grove in the center of the lower edge of the windshield & zip the pen case around the grove to insert the cordage. _________________ Everybody born before 1975 has a story, good, bad, or indifferent, about a VW.

I really dont unserstand the "American" type seal. It confuses the matter.
There are
"Cal look" seals (no trim)
Blocked corner seals, used to be called "german" (for C and T style trim)
"American"?? what does that mean? its a German car. Why are there American seals for a German car?? are these less than blocked german seals? Seinfield rant over.
Common order.
For "T" style, Rubber on glass, trim in rubber, all into the opening.
For "C" style, Rubber on glass, into the opening, trim into seal. |
"American style" usually means that there was chrome trim in the gasket. The Euro cars typically had what we consider "Cal Look" gaskets. _________________ Everybody born before 1975 has a story, good, bad, or indifferent, about a VW.

Thanks everyone for your insights....I think the masking tape approach will be the best strategy to get me started to get the rubber onto the glass. Once I get it all the way around, I'll use the cord/wire in the inner groove and get this PITA project started....I'm sure the 'C' molding installation will be an additional challenge. |

I’ve always done them by myself, as s cheat, an unopened bag of play sand works great to keep pressure on the glass while pulling the cord & then go back outside & smack the window to seat it. _________________ Everybody born before 1975 has a story, good, bad, or indifferent, about a VW.

If my memory is correct I believe KGPR sell a blocked style seal that is made in America with the German specs. Its a Germarican seal. |

I just did this with the T shape molding. It required 2 of us, and masking taping it to the glass every 4-6 inches or it would pop right off. Try taping it to both sides of the glass as you go.
Once it was in, I lifted the seal with a small flat bar and cut the tape back with a razor. |

Ask Chris, he says he does them himself. |
And to think, I edited my post, initially I claimed to do it single handedly. _________________ Everybody born before 1975 has a story, good, bad, or indifferent, about a VW.

I'm about to pull the front and rear glass with chrome trim out of one 58 and put it into another 58 with new rubber. Do I need to pull the chrome trim out first and remove the window? When reinstalling, do I put the glass back in and then press the chrome into the rubber or put the rubber on the glass install the chrome and then put it in the car? I have done a million "Cal Look" windows but never a "stock" with chrome window. _________________ '58 Ghia 2387cc with a Berg / Folts 5 Speed

There are several threads on installing with the "C" mounted first.
https://www.thesamba.com/vw/forum/viewtopic.php?t=288923&highlight=window++trim
However I chime in to emphasize "be careful" with the glass removal (pushing)! There seems to be a global shortage of these windshields right now as I've been looking for 6 months. Of course you already know how to be careful having done a million in the past...but I just wanted to note this. _________________ 1974 Ghia Coupe |

Cut the lip on the gasket that holds it into the opening from the inside & gently work the window out. Start with the back window so that you can get a feel for how to remove the glass because it's tempered glass & isn't prone to cracking like the laminated windshield is.
DO NOT try pushing the windshield out all at once, the seal will still hold it in place & if you just start by trying to push one part of it, it will give suddenly while other parts will still hold firm & cause you to break it. _________________ Everybody born before 1975 has a story, good, bad, or indifferent, about a VW.

I've only installed glass in a bug, but have removed a few windshields. I would think removing an older window you should cut the seal, you'll almost certainly break the glass if you don't. |
