This is something weird happening with my 89 syncro. Months back I would jump in to go and turn the key and nothing....just lights on dash. Changed out ignition and still was happening randomly. Then, one day I took off the plastic clam shell that wraps around the steering column (it was cracked) and the issue went away. Coincidence? Not sure.
Well yesterday, Months later and after having the 1.8 swap put in..I decided to fix the plastic shell and put it back on....and wouldn't you know it, Sally the Syncro left me stranded with the same issue. No clicking, no nothing. I took the shell off (while sitting in the store parking lot boiling) and wala, turned the key and it started.
Soooo, has anyone ever heard of something weird like this? Do you think the metal screws are grounding out the ignition when the column is put on? I cant seem to trace exactly what is taking place. Suggestions?

If you cannot see any broken insulation on a wire I would try to wiggle the wires while you try the ignition and see if there is a change. My guess is you have a wire broken inside the insulation and if pushed into the wrong position it loses contact.

Could also be bad at the connector.

It should be held on with 2 screws that screw into the plastic top cover. The bottom section should have a spring clip that snaps over the column. Is this what you have? If so, really no way for a screw to cause the problem. How about a picture of the ignition harness?

Yep thats exactly what I have. I am having issues uploading pics (even though I have uploaded a bunch prior...need to figure out how to delete some so maybe it will allow me to upload more?)

I'll second the motion for bad wiring or connection to ignition switch; added pressure
from column cover installed causes broken connection. Check it out & report back...

Cool

I do not think there is a pic limit so likely no need to delete.
