What all needs to be lubed on a rear brake job? Put silicone brake grease on the contact points between the shoes and the cylinders and the pivot points at the bottom. Anywhere else? Because they are a squealin' now. Evil or Very Mad

I like to lube the contact points on the backing plate where the edges of the shoes contact it as well. Not sure if that would solve your problem though.

Agree with Altoona. But don't use too much, lest it contaminate the brake shoe linings.

Though technically not a lube, I suppose, I suggest applying a bit of high-temp anti-seize compound to the interface between the drum and the hub, outlined here in red. It may reduce the amount of abeatin' necessary to remove it next time!

The bottom of the brake shoes rest in a mount that floats while in operation. These mounts are often seized into the housing and many don't realize that they are separate pieces. These should be removed and cleaned up well so they freely rotate and are allowed to move out as needed.

The brake adjusting mechanism should be unscrewed, cleaned on a wire wheel, coated with anti-seize and reassembled. Also, the bleeder on the wheel cylinder should be removed, cleaned (being sure the passage is clear), lubed with anti- seize and reinstalled. The rubber cap on the bleeder should be in place when the brake job is done.

While ordering brake parts I bumped into VW brake lube at $51 for 100g (!) and Febi brand for $12. Now the big question - is standard Sil-Glyde or other sil brake paste suitable here?

I have always used the grease I had on hand for the backing plates and pivot points. Just a film to keep metal on metal lubed. Usually CV grease in the little tubes or Redline CV2. But I've also used off the shelf wheel bearing grease.

Agree with Mark; drum brakes don't generate the same amount of heat as disc brakes, high temp and other specifics not as important.

Lube the cylinder bores and piston with brake compatible grease. this will greatly reduce wear and corrosion of cylinder bore. Only use grease designed for this purpose. Regular grease can attack the rubber seals if used.

I don't believe they were asking about rebuilding wheel cylinders. If that is the case, my mistake. Yes, you need to use a specific assembly lube for brake hydraulic cylinder assembly.
