Does anyone have an original brochure of what came as standard equipment and what was an option on a US Vanagon? For example, was power steering standard, or an option?
I'm looking for 1985, but I'm curious on all the years. |

Power steering standard in 85 GL and Camper, optional otherwise it says for 85. The 85 Wolfsburg Camper "weekender" brochure says optional.

| My '86 Camper does not have power steering, but it was optional. On the GL Camper the power steering was standard. |

VW Parts shows the 85 model year production began in 8/84.
They built them about 3,000 per week, by the end of 12/84 it was over 58,000 model year 85 built.
About 140,000 year 85 models built by 8/85 when they started building 86 model year.
Look at the last 6 digits of your vin number.
About 12,000 per month starting August each year, until 1990 models when the factory slowed down to switch over to T4 models.

We bought a brand-new 1982 Westy in 12/'81 and drove North America in all of '82 - the only options we purchased was a left front mud flap - to make, 2 up front and a dash-top organizer - added my own radio, A Volvo cassette/recorder and took it when I sold the unit in '83...
… used that radio, in our next 4 Westys - finally, in '2005 - bought a Ford E-150 cargo and put my own accessory in it - a 1982 Vanagon Westy interior - is the best one yet - with real heat, a/c, automatic w/od, satellite radio and captain's chairs - always 22 mpg.

YESSS!!! This topic is exactly one of the reasons I built www.Vanagons.org
But, ummmm, 1985 is still curiously missing. One of these days...
Thanks MsTaboo for referencing the site. All my countless hours are worthwhile now.

Thanks for the info. The reason I'm asked is that a previous owner on my newly acquired 85 installed some later parts (rectangular HL's & grille, rear windows with vents - 89?).
Also, this van has air conditioning, but it does not have the center overheat duct running down the middle of the roof as my 87 syncro did. It has a dual "boxed-in" section of ducts over the driver & passenger seat, and no ducts aft.
Was that normal for an '85 tintop with AC? |

Looks just like that. Was it a dealer-installed system?
Why not select the AC option box when you originally bought the van?
