After checking out all of the options I decided to use Rit Dye to dye my carpet. In the past the only Rit dye available was the all purpose dye. Now they have a line specifically for synthetics. However, the synthetic line does not have the color I want. I have blue carpet and just want to refresh them. What was has your experience with the all purpose been? Is the synthetic line better? Thank you |

My experience with the RIT dye on a synthetic auto carpet was that it barely did a thing to change the color and became a hazard as to transferring the non absorbed pigment to other things like knees of pants, etc. Don't do it.
I'm unaware of this new line for synthetics and am curious. FYI, you might look at SEM aerosol vinyl dye spray. I used it on a headliner with excellent and durable results, and it may work well on carpet as well - check their website. Seems like you could lightly spray it to cause a bright color without hosing it down and changing the carpet feel too much. Some is bound to happen but it may be acceptable to get the crisp look. It dries flexible and rubbery so not likely going to be like hard dried paint on the carpet. Lots of colors also. _________________ 1987 2WD Wolfsburg Vanagon Weekender "Mango", two fully locked 80 Series LandCruisers. 2017 Subaru Outback boxer. 1990 Audi 90 Quattro 20V with rear locking differential, 1990 burgundy parts Vanagon. 1984 Porsche 944, 1993 Toyota LandCruiser, 2002 BMW 325iX, 1982 Toyota Sunrader |

Yes, SEM paint is a better solution. _________________ Casey--

I used the standard RIT dye two months ago - it came out great. I did not remove the carpets and just dyed them in place. I have the grey interior and took the carpets to a charcoal grey. No dye transfer and no regrets! _________________ '87 Westy "Vanimal"

Huh, I never thought of dying the carpet. Interesting. If I were to do this, I'd probably try a specialty product like this.

My mom is a fiber artist who dyes a lot of her own wool, yarn, silk fabrics, you name it. She'd probably kick me in the knee if I used Rit Dye when there's another readily available and affordable specialty product. It's like using generic gas station oil when there's good stuff right down the road at the FLAPS. Both work, but one is definitely better.
Vanaml- not disparaging your work, I'm glad it came out great! _________________ 1991 Vanagon GL 2.1 AT Westfauxlia. "Frankie" Totaled https://www.thesamba.com/vw/forum/viewtopic.php?t=764510&highlight=carnage

No disparagement taken - different strokes for different folks. I also looked at American Carpet Dyes but RIT was local and I wanted to see the actual package color before buying.
For anyone considering this, my goal was to make my grey carpet a consistent color after years of sun fading. The Charcoal grey came out darker than I anticipated (I tried to make it lighter) but it looks good. I might suggest the lighter grey (which looked too light on the package) then go darker if necessary.
I actually like the Charcoal Grey, but it took a minute to get used to it. Just an FYI. _________________ '87 Westy "Vanimal" |

During my research it seemed the arm and other spray paint dried hard whereas the Rit did not |

I watched a bunch of videos. I am taking mine out because I am going to put down some noise control and heat shield. |

This seems like it may be a good alternative to replacing molded carpet pieces with non-molded replacements with many seams and pieces that are available.
My carpet is in reasonably good shape but consistent color would be nice.
Can you offer a few more tips?
- specific RIT product used?
- how applied (in addition to leaving the carpet in place)?
- photos of the outcome?
Was it as simple as painting or spraying this on the carpet?

I think the technique is to repeatedly fog the carpet in stages, rather than to lay on a thick coat.
Then again, if there are new dyes for synthetic materials, I'm all ears to hear more about positive feedback from folks with actual experience. _________________ Casey--

Interesting. I can't say their example is remarkably compelling but it may improve the looks of a stock carpet w/out the $500 cost of aftermarket kits.
