Hey Samba-isti, Lindsay 37yr old, mechanic from Scotland.
Thought Iíd start a thread on my 1962 westfalia so34, itís my 5th split bus, I took while off VWs for a while after getting messed around with my last bus a 54dd, I bought this from a fine young lad in England Unseen and it came up pretty much to his description and arrived on the day after lockdown had been put in place here in the UK.

I hope I can get a little bit of help keeping it right and maybe even trace some history on it, Iíll try post pictures of the adventures I get up to in too it as I love seeing the stuff you guys get upto over in the states!

The day it left and got to me:

Iím in the process of chasing the history of my bus, sent away for a birth certificate but at a massive long shot anyone remembers this in its previous form with the cream upper half please get in touch-Jamie the previous owner corrected the paint to a more stock look but this is what it looked like when he got it.
It was bought through the tourist delivery programme I think and Iíve found a pen from a Las Vegas Casino and a California tax stamp in it-I know not a lot to go on but I live in hope Laughing

Iíve done heaps of jobs on it, general servicing and adjustments, fitting missing parts, repairing wiring, replacing seals and painting things that needed protecting and correcting-just generally getting to know it an see what needs done.
Iíve flattened the battery due to a wiring fault, had to replace rear shoes an cylinders because of a leak and I sheared a top shocker bolt on the way to work one day-fun! Not bad for 3k miles since mid March.

Iím just going to keep firing the photos in until Iíve caught up with everything Iíve been upto-painted cab floor,it looked bad but was solid.

Dash unfortunately has been hacked but that will be a welding job for the winter when I replace the front screens/seals, the Volkswagen script I would normally hate but Iíve grown to like so will probably stay but I had to paint the dash tray, itís a match close enough for me just now and now has no holes in it thatís not meant to be there.

It had correct size crossplys on it which as pretty as they are had to go-Iíll drive the bus everywhere itíll mostly be b-roads and it often rains in Scotland so the wandering an random grip you get with them is a no-no when carrying my daughter in it.
I tried Avon radial steels (Normally fitted to things like Aston Martins an jaguars Laughing)at first which look like crossplys but they were 185s an just made it rev a bit high a cruising speed so hauled them off,Sold them and fitted Falken 195 AT ďsoft roaderĒ tyres-much better RPM at 50mph an ride great!

Nice! Might move the VW script onto the radio speaker grill, since you are repairing the other hackage of the dash.

Cleaned up this mess/fire hazard, there was a plastic battery tray from a modern car and 2 spare dipsticks in here! Crazy how much crud came out! You can see original paint and the respray colour which is lighter the the original Turkis-its been re-painted in the 1960/70s I guess but all in the engine an cargo area too which I thought was strange.

A note on the paint, it should be a single tone bus which I think is great-maybe one day Iíll get it back to green on top. If anyone can post a link for a good M code decoder that would be great, either the one I was using wasnít working anymore or I was doing it wrong. I did start decoding it from the Eccles Transporter guide, sticking the numbers in would probably be quicker.

Sure, but that is the radio hole. The speaker grill is the area to the right of that now massive hole. Thinking the chrome VW logo has pins on it, and so holes were drilled thru the dash to mount it. Since you are going to fix the radio hole, it would not be hard to add closing off the logo mounting holes. Thinking might be able to remount that logo without hole hackage on the grill.

That cleanup job you did looks like you are trying to fake us out by posting pictures of another bus entirely. Which side of the road does Scotland drive?

Haha! It came out brilliant! We drive on the left with right hand drive cars, itís not really a problem having LHD bus as visibility is good high up and youíre hardly ever overtaking.

So, one of my ďbreakdownsĒ in the bus, itís never failed to get me home but I absolutely crapped myself when this let go! On the way to work one day the Top shocker mount bolt sheared in half! I pulled it out of the way and drove to work, had a look at the stepped bolt thought this ainít happening to me again as to me it looks like a weak point.
So I robbed a bay window bus of a top bolt which is 12mm thread rather than 10mm and drilled the bolt and beam out to suit. Iíll do the other side when I have time.

Cheers man! Vw absolutely nailed the colour with the bus range, the blue white is so subtle but perfect.

Another fun moment I had with the Bus one morning on the daily commute, a Left 90 degree bend with me nipping on (running late every damn day!) I had the passenger door fly open! Tried closing it, the latch part jammed so I had to drive on the second click with a bungee cord on the handle to dash Laughing
When it came to stripping down it was missing screws, the latch face where the screws go in had sheared off, the mech was seized and the striker was badly worn-honestly a complete casserole of nonsense due to no maintenance-Iím sure if someone had greased it back in the day none of this wouldíve happened....

So I lubed up and freed off the latch, welded the catch screw plate part back on,replaced the striker plate with I think a NOS one, adjusted and started to put it back together, as I put the handle back on, the plate that holds the splined crank fell through into the door-REALLY!? off it came again, weld it up and re-fit. Now I guess youíre thinking just put a new one on...the damn thing owes me a lunch breaks-itís gonna work for me now!
