Edit: I was asked to preserved my for sale ad and the amount of work done to my van over the last 3-4 year to get it into the price range that I sold it for. So, below is my original post saying goodbye to all you fine folks.

Then further down the thread is my full classified and more info plus some tutorials I did.

---------------------------------------------------

I cannot thank the wealth of knowledge and helpfulness of this forum enough.

Over the last 3 years I have used the information here to rejuvenate the 87 westy I picked up in MN that was a bit of a garage find. I've enjoyed camping in it in for 3 years, but other priorities have taken time away from camping and I only used it 3 times this summer. So, I'd rather have it be used properly by someone else.

It's now in the hands of the new owners who had an 85 and have regretted selling that since they did. His dad also owned an aircooled repair shop in WV into the 90's and he has a couple beetles at home. So a true old school enthusiast, not a campervan culture kid.

Today, less than 24hrs after buying it, they're driving it to WV and I have zero doubts they'll make it as I did all the work on the van (again, with the knowledge here.)

If anyone is interested, the rims and spacers are still available.

I'm leaving the classified here active as an example of "what vans sell for vs what the asking price is" and the type of work you need to put into them to get them to this price range. This is a legitimate "updated, but nearly stock," van with a very good body on it. No Subaru conversion or any aftermarket bumpers or skid plates or A/C additions, TC seats, or any of that. I got my asking price and had about 4 people lined up behind the local buyer.

The van and work done for reference: https://www.thesamba.com/vw/classifieds/detail.php?id=2497522

Thanks all!

Peace and be awesome to one another.

Sad you had to let her go, but sounds like she will see some happy times coming up. Curious they took her to a VW shop.

Also interesting to see all that has been done. I thought my '91 tin top was being woefully maintained and needs tons of stuff, but in looking through your list, I see that I have done all of what your car has. No cruise, but a rebuilt engine and Matt Steedle tranny, new rear axles, CVs and boots. Maybe I'm not in such bad shape after all.

Congrats on getting your price.

They didn't take it to a VW shop. His Dad use to own one in West Virginia (WV)

Well, VW and WV are easily fat fingered..

Anyway, I think you did well, both on the fixing up, and on the passing it on.

My guess is that life's twists and turns will have you looking for another Bus at some point, and you will start it all over again Smile

We'll keep a light on for ya.

Very Impressive!

Do you have more information/pictures on your build that you can share with us?

I'll edit this post in the future with links to my how too's and add images and I already see something things in the ad above that are duplicates and stuff I forgot to add.

If I had to estimate the amount of $$$ that everything below totaled...I'd say close to $5000 in parts. I personally had less than $3000 into my parts. Labor was done (or paid for,) by the previous owner on some things and the rest done by me.

The reason the PO sold, was that it was costing him too much to "fix the motor," as he's not mechanical and was paying an air-cooled Porsche / VW shop labor rates. I had it fixed with a set of $10 injector seals (connected to a $300 set of new injectors...lol.)

If you're handy and can do your own labor, these vans are NOT expensive to maintain. You just have to be diligent with them and treat them like a 30+ year old classic car that they are.

Classified Ad text / record of work done:

1987 VW Vanagon Westfalia Campervan Price: $25,000

***Sold 9.28.21 for asking price***

1987 VW Westfalia full camper.
103,000 original miles and climbing
2.1L Waterboxer
4speed manual

Clean and fully functional. Many of the common mechanical and maintenance items have been addressed and repaired. I just got back from a 500 mile camping trip. I wouldn't hesitate to drive this van across the country tomorrow. Will cruise at 70mph all day long.

The Audi 18" rims and spacer setup can be negotiated / purchased separately if you're interested. They are NOT included in the price of the van.

This Westy is a survivor / garage find. She was in a garage in MN for 15+ years until 2018 when purchased / rescued from the original owner's son. The original owner had passed away. I am the 3rd owner. I purchased it in Oct of 2018. If you look at the years associated with everything below, if it's 2018 it was done by the gentleman I bought it from. Some of the work he did. Some was done at Further Performance (http://www.fptuned.com/) 2019 and after is by my own hand. When I bought it, it had a pretty significant vacuum leak. New injectors fixed that, was most certainly the injector seals.
