I use the Ford Ranger, frame rail mounted, fuel pump. The Type III has a fuel pressure regulator which manages the pressure in the fuel rail. Its a return design so any excess provided by the pump bypasses the fuel rail and is returned to the tank. The regulator is located on the passenger side, in the front of the engine bay.

As mentioned above, the ford ranger external pump (located on the truck's frame rail, not inside the tank) is an ideal replacement. If you can't find one locally, grab one of these, like I did. Note that the original fuel pump has three ports, one to feed the fuel loop, one that loops into the return line and back up into the bottom of the tank, and of course the inlet port, coming from the angled tube beneath the tank. You will need to remove the 3-way "Y" fitting and eliminate the hose that was routed directly from the original pump back to the tank.

I've included photos of it mounted on the original plate, and back onto the beam. The center of the beam is a better location than the original mounting place towards the outer end of the beam due to the locations of the input/output ports on the new pump. The space is too tight to connect fuel line placement to these ports if left in the original mounting location on the beam.

That's what I use (the frame rail mounted Ford ranger pump). I either go with the Airtex E2000 from Autozone, or the Precision brand E16020 from O'Reilly's. I've used both with good success. I only mention them, because I like to buy something like that local in case I have a problem with it (like a leak between the pump body and the head). Yes, I've had that happen before, and had to go to another store to get another one. And if you have a problem with a mail order pump, USPS doesn't like to smell gas in the shipping box.
Ray has a huge list of alternate pumps you can use too. I think he posted it up in the type4 forum, as they use the same pump we do. I hope this helps.
