Just to preface this - I have searched the sticky, and most of the threads there are 10+ years old. I am having problems finding an agreed value policy for my Vanagon. It is a 1984 tin top that I have converted to be a sort of a weekender/westy hybrid. It has a bed and sink, but no stove so I don't think it will classify as a camper. My current insurer (Progressive) only wants to do a stated value policy, and Haggerty won't even touch it because it isn't stored in a private garage (I'm in a nice gated apartment complex). I have receipts and documentation for all the work I've put into it and have it valued at about $14,000. Any people in California that can point me in the right direction? |

From what I read in the sticky most people advise to find an AVP over that to avoid fighting the insurance company. My insurance adjuster even advised the same thing. |

Stated value puts a cap on value. If you have a stated value of 14k the insurance company will pay up to 14k but they will look for comps in your area and you will most likely me in for a fight as they will offer a lot less. An agreed value for 14k means if your car is totaled you will get 14k. |

I'm surprised to hear that - thought most carriers used Actual Cash Value (ACV) in their policies.
With ACV I wouldn't say you have to 'fight with the insurance company' at time of loss but you do have to have your ducks in a row vis a vis the value of the van.
An appraisal now may be helpful later but you can also get an appraisal after a loss based on what the van was worth prior to the loss. |

I spoke to my Car Insurance Agent yesterday about switching policies on the Westy. I asked about Stated Value. She steered me toward an Agreed Value Policy. She said I'd need to provide receipts for all improvements and show a consensus Base Value (what similar vehicles with similar mileage sell for). We'd come to an agreement on Value based on her interpretation of what I provided
On the advice of the PO, I went with Safeco when I bought the Van in 2018, Full Coverage. I'm gonna switch Agents but keep the same company when it's time for renewal.

EXACTLY-stated value puts a cap on the payout.
Agreed value is the amount of the payout if the car is totaled without the haggle that you will have with the stated value policy.
Some agents do not know the difference so do not think a stated will pay the stated value if your vehicle is totaled. You will be in for a shock and a big headache. |

The definition of Agreed Value from Safeco. See if you can insure with them in CA. There's also a Vanagon aware agent in Sacramento who has been mentioned here who I talked with a few years ago. Haggerty is interesting but it seems they don't want you actually driving your car except to sbux once a month.

YES!
Do not rely on a verbal explanation from your agent. Many are not familiar with this type of coverage and will give incorrect advice. Get it in writing from the policy. _________________ Dave O

You only want Agreed Value. That sets the ACV of the bus. |
I have a classic car policy for Agreed value through Grundy. I currently have 4 cars on it now. Only 1 is in a "garage"
Grundy keeps bumping up the value too. I think last time I checked, my syncro is at 31k...Started at 18 or 19k 7 years ago |

Every company has different definitions and regs in each state
Other than sideline interest , these threads are useless for advice in your specific state, unless the poster is in your state
It can even vary by region within a state.
All the money you spent fixing broken stuff isn't improvements either, that's maintenance, so don't think those losses are covered. _________________ πΊπΈ πΊπΈ πΊπΈ πΊπΈ πΊπΈ πΊπΈ πΊπΈ π π π |

Grundy does seem to "require" a garage or enclosed storage. How do you get around that? _________________ 1987 Westfalia 2.1 WBX Manual |
