We'd planned to spend a couple nights in JTNP for Cindy's Birthday. I made reservations for a Wednesday & Thursday. Her 8 month-old Might-As-Well-Be-A-Catahoula Hound puppy was ailing too much to stay at the Puppy Hotel the first night. We waited overnight and what ever it was worked it's way out of his system. We left on her Birthday.
Stayed at Indian Cove Campground. Sign said, "All Campgrounds Full".
Climbers across from us were rappelling off the rocks
We got squared away at the campsite and drove down to the end of the road to the trailhead for Rattlesnake Canyon. Spent some time bouldering and headed back to camp.

Cooked Salmon on the campfire that night, had a lemon mousse cupcake with a candle, bottle of Opolo red and chocolate truffles. Still waiting on the camp loveseat I bought off Amazon for the occasion. Sang "Happy Birthday" to Cindy.
Next day we hopped back on Hwy 62 Eastbound towards 29 Palms to the turnoff for 49 Palms Oasis Trail.

Had to leave my Samsung S8 charging. Took pics with Cindy's iphone.
About halfway along the Trail you can see the oasis at the bottom of the gorge.
49 Palms Oasis
On the way back you can see 29 Palms USMC Base in the distance.
After that hike, wanted a hamburger & a Coke. Stopped at Steak & Shake in Yucca Valley on the way home.
Temps in the low 80s in the day, high 30s at night. Stars no Moon.
Happy Trails & Be Safe

My wife and I badly want to get down to JTNP sometime next year. What do you think is the best time of year to visit?
Thanks for posting the pics, it was a nice way to start my Monday!

Beautiful!
We'd never been there before, and so a couple autumns ago we leisurely camped our way down the coast and got as far as Kings Canyon. Wife was walking the dog in the morning, he lunged at a squirrel or something knocking her to the ground and she broke her pelvis in two places....
Now that she's back to 100% we'll have to try again. It looks like a gorgeous place. _________________ ‘85 Adventurewagen - FAS GenV inline VW 4 cylinder

Thx for sharing the trip report.
JTNP is amazing to visit at any time of the year - one just needs to be mindful of the temperatures and the types of activities one wants to do - we have done day trips in August arriving in the early morning for hiking/climbing and also in December/January where it has been mid-70's on the valley floor and a chilly, low 40's at JTNP. It remains on my bucket list for a Westy trip, but that will be March/April or October/November as I have camped in high desert in the summer in the Westy and admittedly, its not fun trying to sleep comfortably in 85 - 100 degree temps. Another interesting hiking spot in the Palm Desert area is the Painted Canyon Trail (ladders route), but be forewarned, the vehicle access can be touch and go due to washouts.
Again, thanks for sharing the report. _________________ 1991 Westfalia EJ251, 1972 Volvo 1800 ES |

Awesome, thanks for sharing. We were in J-tree last Fall and your post makes me want to go back. There's magic in that desert!
You should check out Giant Rock next time you go - https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Giant_Rock _________________ '85 Westfalia 1.9L

Thanks for sharing awesome! Here in Baja California Peninsula (Mexico) theres a cañon like the palm tree photo you shared, theres a big pool right now (it dries out after winter) and the ranch owners have several hot springs pools and when I mean hot they are hot... Really nice place.
Thanks again for reminding me of our region hope to visit that area soon of USA. _________________ Roger

I heard about Giant Rock back in the Late Sixties, UFOs, Aliens and such. George Van Tassel.
https://www.atlasobscura.com/places/giant-rock
In 1992 I worked for a company contracted out to utilities to radio-locate underground cables and pipes. There was a 7.3 earthquake in Landers. I had locating jobs all over the desert. I stumbled on to The Integratron out where the roads are named after planets.
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Integratron
As with a lot of relatively remote places, some interesting stuff going on.
Happy Trails, Be Safe

Integratron is totally worth a visit. Make a reservation for the sound bath, they fill up!
Noah Purifoy Museum is cool too, and sort of on the way to Integratron from Joshua Tree. _________________ ———————
