The van came with 2 swing aways: one for spare tire, one for luggage carrier. I don't like the way the "sleek lines" of the Vanagon are disrupted by these. So I adapted it (with the help of a welder friend)to add a bike rack and make most everything detachable when not needed. Very happy with how it came out. I could even pop that remaining bit of rack with the spare carrier off as well (spare is fitting fine up front).

Looks like an interesting approach, especially since most aftermarket swingaways utilize the receiver and yours is still free for other inserts if they don't interfere with the bike. _________________ '87 Westy in Wolfram Grey Metallic, tragically crushed by a falling hickory tree in my own driveway and now gone, leaving me Vanagonless and with no plans to replace it, alas. |
