"Imagination" is one way to describe the modifications/design of the vehicle.
For me this thing hideous. A triumph of technical skill over design sensibility. _________________ SL |

It is hard to improve on perfection, and the various generations of split buses are near perfection. I have yet to see any major or minor body mods that look better than stock. _________________ .

Nicely done 23 window. I only spotted a few missteps.
No ashtrays
Parcel tray is not covered.
Underside is completely painted.
Terrible engine and transmission combination.
No middle seat kick panel.
Wrong pop out latches _________________ Go Reds! Smash state!

It looks like he posted comments to say it's a 1776cc engine so maybe not as bad as the 1600/freeway flyer combo in the original ad text
I saw he posted a glass video.
Some glass is wrong, mostly the front door glass pieces.
It should all be SIGLA, although obviously the safari glass front and rear will be whatever those aftermarket companies supply.
No logos on the skylight glass? Maybe it's all reproductions there.
Front vent wing latches should be chrome, not black
Ragtop headliner piece looks a little saggy? _________________ How to Post Photos

More
Wrong dash and bulkhead assist handles
Hubcap centers should be painted
Reproduction front safaris
Those rear safaris should be thrown in the trash!!
Lots more, that seems to have been fairly well covered on BAT _________________ Transporter Restorations

The right cars always bring good to great money.
Helps if original colors, stock appearance, complete and in this case well engineered driver.
Prefer this late model over the bullet sealing wax red double cab simply because of the color....dove blue exemplifies vintage commercial VW goodness.
Agreed that it should have brought more.
Now every double cab for sale the owners will think $50/60K is justified for a project. Reality check, the vast majority of the restoration is in the body and paint not the dream asking price for beat down projects that will take $80/100K or more to be as nice as this one. _________________ Transporter Restorations

This was a bit of a shocked.
https://bringatrailer.com/listing/1958-volkswagen-bus-11/
The ‘60 double cab sold for just a bit less and a 21 window earlier in the month was bid up to $125k.
Wonder what others think about this. I have my own theories, but interested in others. _________________ Go Reds! Smash state!

Time and time again this has happened on press bumper deluxes. The hardcore treasure them most but almost every time I’ve ever seen a “restored” press bumper at auction it struggles to break 100k. I can think of 5 others off hand from Barret Jackson and mecum that have sold for 90k while during the same auction later 23’s brought significantly more. People that spend the most money don’t want those colors. And the hardcores want them OG as well as don’t want to spend that kinda money.
No shock here, with fees and it’s age on restoration showing, it brought a tad more than I expected.

I agree with Graysvws - The earlier colors just aren't as popular at auction, even the larger Barrett-Jackson/etc auctions, regardless of condition. |
Begs the question then, what are the most popular colors for a deluxe. Looking at BAT it seems turkis blau Weiss is the winner followed by SWR/BG and then Sea Blue/blue white. _________________ Go Reds! Smash state!
