as the others said, that's an early gasket you have. BTW a 1984 mexican bug's engine for the internal mexican market in its original spec has no fuel injection nor hydraulic lifters, and it is in most respects similar or the same as a late (pre-FI) german 1600. _________________ cars:

No, no, we're saying you got 36 HP gaskets, you want the later 40-horse thru 1600 gaskets. Yes, order some for a 1969. (Or 70, or 71, or 65, or 62...you get the picture ) |

How do I determine what I need? JBugs has these:
valve cover gaskets are used on 1200cc 40 Horse through 1600cc Type 1, 2 & 3 engines as well as Vanagon watercooled 1.9 & 2.1 Liter engines. The valve cover gaskets fit 1961 through 1977 Beetles
OR
valve cover gaskets are used on 25 and 36 Horse engines. The valve cover gaskets fits 1954 through 1960 Beetles
I was told the 84 Mexican bug was essentially the same as the 1969 bug, which would suggest the first item description, but then you're suggesting it is a 36hp so this suggest the second item description.
Any idea which I should try? |

That looks like a super early gasket, like 25 hp, or 36 hp. Is there any chance you clicked and ordered the wrong ones? The lower corner radii are too tight on that gasket to boot. You need good ol' 1600 gaskets.
(Yes, I know I said all the gaskets were the same earlier...but 36hp?) |

Can you post a picture of the head that belongs to that valve cover? _________________ Eventually, "we are what we pretend to be.’”

Robert,
Have you read through this thread on Mexi Beetles?
https://www.thesamba.com/vw/forum/viewtopic.php?t=583972
Also, Hopkin seems to be the resident expert on these cars.
Antonio Trejo sells part for Mexi Beetles too. He may be able to lend a little knowledge to ya.

Regarding the valve cover gasket. I am under the impression that they are not any different than a standard 1600cc engine valve cover. I could be wrong in this thought.
Any mainline auto parts store, should be able to order a gasket set for your engine.
Don't the Mexi Beetle engines, have hydraulic lifters? _________________ I have learned over the years.

I pondered the same question last night and researched as much unspecific garbage the web could offer, and near as I can figure, they have basic ol' type 1 heads. Which makes the OP's VC gasket situation all the more puzzling.
OP: the reason vendors don't list valve cover gasket sizes is that, there IS only one size. So without seeing pictures of your exact situation, and perhaps measurements, it's hard to say what's going on. I've only ever used good ol' cork gaskets, and in 38 years of messing with these cars, never got a gasket that was so undersize. And just so we're on the same page, "about an inch" is about four yellow #2 pencils laid side by side
Pics please.
By the way, your gear oil looks maple syrup colored, so it looks plenty clean, I wouldn't change it out...but you should check the level and top it off after replacing axle seals.

Doing a valve adjustment and find the valve cover gasket ordered from JBugs that was supposed to fit is too small (about an inch too short sideways). No local stores I know of in my small town carry anything that will fit. Unfortunately I peeled out the old gasket before checking the new would fit so no reusing it.
Is there are way to know the gasket you order online will fit? I can't find anywhere that gives any kind of dimensions. Am I left ordering from somewhere else just hoping it will fit and repeating that until I luck out?

This may be a stupid question, but when I fix the gear oil leak, should I go ahead and drain and replace the oil?
Follow-up question unrelated to the gear oil leak but now an issue in getting the car back on its feet.

Original Poster: you can also mull some of these threads, there are many good tips and comments from others who have been down this road many times. The early brake drums are slightly different so don't be distracted if you see parts mentioned (like "oil slinger") that aren't on your car. The threads with the most replies often have more pics and more discussion. It makes good bedtime reading.
