How are people insuring their vans at value in BC. Does ICBC have any products?

I also have a TDI install, I think that makes a difference.

1987 Full Westy

Thanks,
Gregor

As a Westfalia is classified as a motorhome in BC you have to go through ICBC and there is no private alternative.
You are able to have a declared value.

I declare mine to be valued at $25,000. It’s in very good but not pristine condition, with a Subaru 2.2.
Interestingly, when I bought it (I think 4 years ago), it had not been classified as a motor home, even though it is a full camper Westfalia (I’m pretty sure since new). I had it reclassified as a motor home, which was simply a matter of telling the agent that it was one. This makes a considerable difference to the insurance cost.

Thanks, considerable difference in which direction?

Interesting...
Lets define motor home. I think it needs a toilet to qualify.

I'm only inquiring because at one point the situation arose when I requested a tow, the guy was wanting to charge more because it is a motor home, I argued no, its a van with a pop top.
Either one could cost you more or less depending on situation.

To qualify as a Motor Home for ICBC, it needs to have a few certain items. You can look this up (I don’t remember the details). There are something like 5 items that it needs to have at least 3 of, bed, sink, stove (something along those lines).

This isn’t an ICBC site, but it lists the requirements.

The two factory Westfalias I've owned were both classified as motorhome. There were no discussions, alternatives, checklists etc.
It might be otherwise in another province and maybe an out-of-province vehicle that is being registered in BC might have to go through some verification process?

So if the USA insurance states it’s not a motor home , is there an issue if you’re traveling thru BC?

Along those lines,!what is up with the tabs?? are the tabs no longer needed? I don’t see current tabs on any you bc guys down in Washington.

Jeff

No more date stickers needed for BC vehicles as of 2023.

Regarding insurance, BCAA and a few 3rd party providers offer additional insurance coverage for classic cars or vehicles with a value above ICBC book value. You need to submit pictures and have a walk around the vehicle done if there is any concern. Of course you have to pay additional premiums but replacement value will not be enough with ICBC only.

Jeff I’m sure there are no issues with you travelling in BC. We’re happy to have you, and we’re equally happy travelling through the American PNW!

Looks like there are no problems with getting motorhome registration with a specified value.

Camper Van must meet 3 of the following criteria to qualify as a motorhome:

    cooking facilities
    refrigeration or icebox
a self-contained toilet not capable of easy removal
heating or air conditioning independent of the vehicle's motor, or
a potable water supply system, including a faucet and a sink.

Final numbers:
1987 VW Vanagon Camper - @ $1234 insurance per year(as motorhome)
Liability: $2,000,000
Collision: $1000
Comprehensive: $300
Declared Value: $40,000
