Our 83 1/2 is spending all of it's time in the deserts of the SW these days and the dust is causing the door locks and a lot of other things to be poorly functioning. One of these others is the brake adjusters which have flat out frozen up. Just wondering how people with more desert experience keep their brake adjusters functioning.

i have NO desert experience, only the pain of pretty much driving in sea water up in the frozen north. BUT, were i to need to have that adjuster work in a dry dust environment, i would use a light spray coating of Moly Mist. give it 24hrs to cure on the threads. it'll be a thin coating that won't interfere with thread action but provide dry lube.

I used to use antiseize but it dries up and make the adjuster sticky.

I now use brake caliper pin grease, seems to be holding up much better.

It looks like the factory had some kind of clear/yellowish grease as well from when I took my brakes apart the first time (15K original miles)

I use antiseize there on the adjuster threads. For the brake pistons and cylinders I use brake lube, also called VW brake paste

Dan recommended a canned elixir earlier this year and the advice was among the most important parts of the project.

i take some heat from my garage buddies for having a can for everything... but who do they come to when they need something?!!

here's a nice vintage assortment... the TF Solvent (R113), banned by the Montreal Accord in 1996. Ignition Sealer, still available but probably without the toluene this one has. and ZIP airframe grease, just used this yesterday on the plow truck to lube a lower ball joint that had a loose boot and i can't get grease into anymore. sprayed the boot full of this stuff. works great on door hinges and missiles, too!
