Finally got around to putting my door handles back on but I'm an idiot and having difficulty with two things.

First, I'm pretty sure I have the correct key. It goes in smoothly and I've never had any other door handles or key.

One, the doors don't seem to lock. When I close the doors, the passenger door engages and closes. I cannot seem to figure out how to lock it however. The key only rotates about one quarter clockwise and slightly less counter-clockwise. Did I do something wrong during install??

Second, the driver's side door does the same thing as above until I did something, when turning the key in the lock, and now it will not engage and just stays open.

Spray some lube on your door latch mechanism. I use LPS1 and/or other spray greases. DO NOT use wd-40, it will certainly make it worse when it dries down all sticky.

It's been a while since I thought about this... but doesn't the lock act in kinda a funny way? Like when locked the handle still moves, but it just does not operate the release? The only splittie I have now is a December 1955 Wolfsburg so maybe that is different?

Yes, it's different than a later Bus.

On ice pick handles:
The driver's outside handle still pulls out when locked but it won't open the door.
The pin on the handle that connects things from the handle to the "finger" that pushes on the internal door mechanism is moved out of the way when locked so the "finger" is not moved on the handle

On the passenger side when the door is locked from the inside, the actual door mechanism moves out of the way of the handle so pulling on the handle would open the door except what gets pushed inside the door is moved out of the way

Passenger side:

It pushes on the piece in the center, you can see it moves down and out of the way when locked

The original poster has a '66 bus, which has late door mechanisms/handles.
