This '55 Convertible just feel into my lap this weekend. It is rough, but an early 'Vert none the less.
A neighbor listens to a radio station that does a Saturday on air "trading post" deal, where people call in w/ stuff to sell or trade, real old timey Vermont stuff, he wrote down the phone # and came by with it, it was advertised as a '58 Vert, I drove 20 min. to look at it, but getting it home was going to be a pain, my tow rig is down, and I've used a bunch of my AAA tows, so I passed.
The owner called this a.m., said he could trailer it here, for $20........ Ummm ok, twist my arm. It's 30 years in a Barn find.
The # on the trans tunnel looks like 1---- 0855890, it is really hard to read. _________________ Tom

Lucky guy! Wish I had those kinds of friends!
It will be fun to follow this one along. What is the plan? _________________ Jimbo

No real plans, I'm probably just going to store it for the Winter and sell it in the Spring, I'm a Bus guy, and according to my wife, I have too many cars already ! I've lived here long enough (37 years in VT./N.H.) to be "that VW guy" so I do get leads once in a while, and 1 out of 10 usually are worth looking into, but with 5+ summer only cars/trucks, I can't keep all my finds....... _________________ Tom

Sweet find! Even has rear view mirror and visors. and appears to be in excellent shape (considering it's in Vermont). |

Any ideas on how to get the locked hood to open, so far, no luck w/ the keys that came w/ it in unlocking the pull handle.

Have you ever tried picking a lock? Many of these old cylinders are pretty easy if they aren't rusted in place. _________________ modok wrote:

So I removed a set screw on the sleave that the hood pull goes thru, pulled on the knob enough that the hood opened ! _________________ Tom

Congrats on the early Oval Kabriolett score, a rare early Kab and pretty hard to find nowadays. Glad you got the front hood open. The key code is stamped into the chrome hood handle somewhere. It will read like: SG123.
Just contact Gabriel with the "SG" key code and he can make and mail you a key so the hook lock is functional! On my '57 Kabriolett project, my front hood lock handle and my engine compartment locking "T" handle were the same key code (but not the same as the ignition switch and door handle key).
The interior mirror assemble and especially the sunvisors look to be complete and in very nice condition... Lucky you! Be very gentle with those plastic visors as after almost 70 years they might be a bit brittle and easy to crack if manhandled. I hope you got the rear window frame/and glass and the rear deck lid as they are hard to find and expensive.
The knob on that interior dome light switch near the front hood handle doesn't look right in shape or color of the knob. Did you get the unique-to-Kabs front and rear seats? I can't wait to see more of that score of yours. Post more photos as you can! You should fix up and keep that Kab, and then take your wife out "leaf-peeping" in your beautiful State! She'll appreciate it a lot more!

Not sure what Two-tone dolphin means ?
BulliBill, it came w/the front seats, not the rear seat, a friend in Mass. says he has a rear seat, getting him to part w/ it might be difficult. No bumpers or fenders.
I'm at the stage in life now where I'm not doing resto's, Mr. Artha Ritus in the knees/ankles/feet ect. makes doing the garage work painful, I'll be passing it on to someone w/ more energy/time/$$ than I have. _________________ Tom

Very worth while project awaiting someone. Glad you may pass it along to somebody. I’d step up but I don’t have enough room right now. |

Tony my VW dreams are usually in the Bus category, like a Binz Dc...
Crazy stuff happens when you least expect it, it is in storage for now, come Spring I'll find it a new home w/ someone that has the means to do it justice. _________________ Tom

Well, I had the local cops come and do a VIN verification on the '55, this will allow me to get a title for it. He said it is not stolen, asked what color it was, I said Red? He asked if rust was a color, and said apparently it is a color, I said I think it was 2 tone and he said yes, it says it was. I hope to have the title in a few months. _________________ Tom
