|
|
So, I need new door seals on my Sea Sand late 66 sunroof beetle. The question to which I have not found an answer? Is a late 66 (with 67 style outside handles) the same seal as the "67 and later" seal commonly available? Or is it like the "66 and earlier" style seal? Is the seal difference related to the door latch mechanism only, or is it more about door shape and seal channel changes?
Just need to know which seals to order for this winter project. My car has the later style outside handles. I can dig up the VIN if that helps, but it seems that the handle style is main identifier.
Thanks for any info you guys can share.

Not sure what the actual difference is between the two seals. All I can say is the parts manual lists only the one type of seal used up through the very end of the '66 model production; there is no mid production change to the '67 and up style seal. _________________ 1960 Ragtop w/Semaphores "Inga" |

So the 66 door is the same as the 65 and earlier door, regardless of the outside handle? Makes sense I suppose. Wish I had an early 66 and a 67 door here to compare for any obvious changes.
Thanks for the help. Anyone else want to chime in? _________________ Confusious say it takes it takes two wipes to know you need three, but it takes three wipes to know it only needed two. |

| I have an early '66 (August '65 build) that seems to have original seals. I'll be happy to take photos if it helps you. |

That would be great, if only to see for sure if/when they actually changed. I'll take a photo or two of mine for comparison. _________________ Confusious say it takes it takes two wipes to know you need three, but it takes three wipes to know it only needed two. |

65/66 door seals are the same..actually 56-66 are the same
67-77 seals are different, the latch style and location was moved so its a little different in that area.
The outside handle has nothing to do with the seal
Note.... the door size and body opening size never changed the entire air cooled Beetle production.

OK Cool. Good info.
Iowegian has an early production 66 (Aug 65) that I wondered if it would look any different in the latch area than a late 66 like mine. Since 66 is a crossover year for many things (like the outside handle) I figured it would be best to figure this out before ordering the seals.
Your statement that the outside handle did not affect the latch or seal shape was really what I was looking for.
66 seals will be ordered soon. _________________ Confusious say it takes it takes two wipes to know you need three, but it takes three wipes to know it only needed two. |

I'm quite sure this seal is original.

I'll get a photo of mine tomorrow, just for reference. Dark and cold out there now, and I'm feeling wimpy. _________________ Confusious say it takes it takes two wipes to know you need three, but it takes three wipes to know it only needed two. |

| make sure the felt between the inside door handle to lock bar and door is glued in place on door, dont let it fall away. that felt can stop a hideous rattle noise when driving. It may drive you nuts if that bar vibrates on the door. trust me I know. I've was in therapy till I replaced the felt, but still feel a bit nuts sometimes as an after effect. |

Agreed. Rattles drive me crazy. Old cars can be tough to make quiet-ish. _________________ Confusious say it takes it takes two wipes to know you need three, but it takes three wipes to know it only needed two. |
