The Owners Manual refers to 8 and 15 amp fuses but doesn't show which fuse goes in which position in the fuse block. Photos in the gallery show a variety of combinations being used. Which is correct? Thanks.

Indeed it would. Friday night after a long week....

It's a 1956 ambulance. It has the regular 1956 6 fuse box.

No worries! Smile

Should be 15 Amp in all, except one fuse spot. The far right spot going to the horn and wiper motor being 8 Amp.

You can also confirm this by sorting out the Watt/Amp draws for each fuse. EG starter solenoid draws about 10-12 Amps. So 12 Amps x 6 volts = 72 Watts.

A 15 Amp fuse x 6 volts = 90 Watts

While an 8 Amp fuse x 6 volts = 48 Watts.

Wiper runs 20 to 22 Watts, etc...

For those items without listed Amp/Watt draws in the VW literature, a clamp type multi-meter will show you the real amounts of those.

Thanks.

The various fuse kits being sold seem to be composed of 8 amp and 16 amp fuses. Do 15 amp European type fuses even exist anymore?

Is an ambulance different?

Normally it's all 8 amp fuses. They are white in color.

You are right it says 8/15amp but I have no idea what the 15 amp would be used for, unless it's some accessory.

I believe everyone uses the 16amp / red fuses now, if needed

Yes, Everett is correct. All white 8 amps except one red 15a. Bentley manual should show it well. Wiring diagrams are available on this site.

Page 52 of my 64/65 model year Owner's Manual says 8 amp fuses; pic of fuse box is also all white fuses. Checking the one for your year is best bet.

So I looked at EDIT - first poster's 57 Owner's Manual in the Tech section... and while it CLEARLY shows a row of white (8 amp) fuses across the box, the damn text says keep a set of spares in 8 AND 15!

So much for looking at the manual as 'best bet.'

I would guess a 15 could go on farthest right, as it handles all the lights, wipers, etc. But if an 8 there isn't blowing regularly under load, it's safer to keep that lower amperage fuse in place. If it does blow eventually, you'll know you have an unexplained load increase.

For the 62 owner, the manual does say "8 amp fuses" for spares.

'66 and '67 are Red Fuse in two right spots.

Not sure about Westy interior lights fuse or backup lights harness fuse.
