I was recently telling a VW buddy about the one that got away, and thought I’d see if 1) my memory was good and 2) if anyone knew of this Beetle or where it is?
In 88 or 89 I saw an ad in local Austin paper for a very early Bug; my memory of it was 46. Went to look at it with some friends and it was a crash box trans with cable brakes. A friend drove it around the neighborhood having the time of her life (I did not have a license yet, despite having driven a 70 for over a year. Texas still let you drink in car, too). Battery area was rotted, some dents. Asking price was less than $1000! Might have been 600.
Hilariously, I was more interested in the singlecab the guy wasn’t selling. My memory is of a black or dark blue car. Seller was a Black serviceman named Eric IIRC, and he was going back overseas; he was taking the truck so he had to sell a few other cars.
If that story rings any bells, let me know! If not, it means there may be a hidden treasure somewhere just outside of Austin waiting to be found… _________________ Craig K
