|
|
Hello,
I have been looking for a low profile 6v battery for my split (1952).
I am in Canada and the stores, Nappa & Canadian tire, only have an 8.75 inch height battery.
Any recommendations?
I'll have to buy in the USA if necessary.
Thanks. |

I believe it would be the same as I run in my stock 1960 beetle: 19L. these are 7.5" tall and available at many locations in the USA. prices have almost doubled in the last few years so expect in the $200 range.
I have typically gotten a decade of life out of mine.
NAPA: Part #: BAT 7217L

I buy the 19L batteries. Have to call around, getting harder to find, and expensive. Paid $193 for the last one at my local Auto Parts Chain. They had to order it from their main distribution center. _________________ John Henry

Optima makes a 6v battery that is half as wide as a regular battery and can be mounted sideways. It's also 800cca

Somebody needs to get creative and make a battery box for the Optima that looks like an old battery! _________________ Midwest Autosavers, Inc. Woodstock, IL |

Man the 19L batteries have become hard to find, and with cost approaching that of an Optima I got motivated. I've always run 19Ls since they are so OG, but need to consider alternates.
I came up with this adapter. The two plastic blocks simulate the size of a 19L battery, so the original battery cover/strap can be used. This one is for an oval window. You also need a longer ground strap, and some sort of terminal covers for the clamps, to prevent shorts. Now on a later beetle with kick panels you're good to go.
Putiting this out there for comments and/or interest... |

Yes, these are 3D printed. I also modeled up a simplified version if you wanted to machine/fabricate a set out of solid plastic. They are the same parts upper/lower.
The battery is held in place with features, so it won't slip/shift while driving, sort of like a "saddle" clamp design. |

Recently had to order a 6V battery for a project and tried to get an Interstate 19L which had been spec't at 172mm wide, 227mm long, which converts to 6.77" x 8.94"not sure of height. The 19L is no longer listed and has apparently been superceded by P/N 1-VHD. The newly listed battery measures 9" L, 6 15/16" W, 8 3/4" H. Battery should arrive next week, so I can check fit of cover, which I hope fits, not too many options at this point. Hope this helps those looking for new batteries. |

Update on low profile 6v battery for Splits. Advance Auto has a Die Hard 6v 19L battery listed for $192-. Ht - 7.5", W - 6.8", L -8.2". I'm staying with the Interstate battery I ordered since height is not a concern ( no back seat ) and have always had very good luck with Interstate batteries for my other 6v cars. |
