The last couple of days, I decided to undertake a carburetor rebuild on my 1984 Mexican model 34 pict 3 carburetor. Everything went fine, taking it apart, cleaning, and putting it back together, but when I reinstalled it, the problem started. When I tried to start the car, it would fire up but would be very loud and die after maybe 5 or so seconds of it running very loudly. I could kinda keep it alive if I pressed the gas, but again, it would rev up super loud compared to how it normally sounds. Any help on what the next step is would be really appreciated. Thanks in advance.

Howdy

Perhaps the needle hasn't seated. I always tap the handle of a screwdriver against the side of the bowl WHILE cranking after a rebuild.
Also the air/fuel screws may be outta whack. Try 2 out on fuel (small) & 4 out on air (large). This from a soft bottoming out.
This assumes you have no vacuum leaks.

Good luck ... stay safe

Was the carb rebuild the ONLY thing you worked on? Did you do any work on the exhaust system or intake manifold? Where is the sound coming from? It can help to use a length of rubber hose or tubing held to your ear to isolate the sound source and move the other end around to listen for where the sound is loudest. Loud noise is often related to exhaust leaks but could be something as simple as the fan rubbing on the inside of the fan shroud.

See if you can isolate where the sound is coming from?

I always wondered what happens when people install the white bit backwards?
Seems like it would restrict float movement Think this picture is correct. If you dive back in there, let us know the orientation. I’m not implying this is your issue. I don’t want to send you down a rabbit hole.

To answer a few of the questions yes the carb is the only thing I have worked on since driving it, the air flow screws are adjusted how they should be and lastly, the float holder thing is in the correct orientation. I’m not sure what else might be the problem. Thanks in advance for the help.

This is weird that it’s making a strange noise.

Did you remove distributor cap? Or just the wires? If so could they backwards. Did you touch the distributor at all?

What did you use to clean the passages in the carburetor and how did you blow them out? Did you remove the little ball bearing in the bottom of the float bowl?

There's many things that could cause these symptoms. A vacuum leak from something not hooked back up or tightened up? There's videos on Youtube that walk people through rebuilding those carbs. Maybe review a couple of them to see if you missed something.

If you can't sort it out, [email protected] is your man to go through the carb.

You might try taking it apart again and checking over everything. Make sure the jets are clear. How many miles do you have on the carburetor?

At this point you probably need to pay a video with sound to give a better idea what the sound might be. Did you isolate where the sound is coming from?

I was just thinking, is the round plate peened in place on the rear face of the carb missing? These occasionally fall out leaving a large hole into the carb body, increasing the noise and causing idle problems. Here is a close up pic showing the roundopening left when the plate comes off.

If the plate is missing, look around the engine compartment. Often you will find it laying somewhere.

Or epoxy a dime into the hole.

Before I knew that, I just jammed a rubber stopper into the hole, but the emission guys caught that. So now I run a Solex 30/31PICT on an adapter on my 1600cc DP engine.

The accelerator pump rod isn't connected to the accelerator pump diaphragm, when you open the throttle does a stream of gas shoot down the carb throat?

Is the throttle sticking open at start up along w/the choke being engaged? Is the accelerator pump cam scraping the alternator housing, possibly causing the throttle to stay open if you're pumping the gas at start up? How about a picture
or video of the carb at start up during one of these high-rev episodes?

You might keep it all together in a single thread too, I see 3 threads from you on your carb/start-up issues.
