I'm in the process of installing the MansiSpeed EFI system on my 85 1.9 (GW 2.2).
I removed the crank pulley, shield and necessary other things but, as I moved the alternator, I must have created a leak in the coolant system.
The leak is at the crossover pipe to the right side head and leaked a couple ounces overnight. The engine hadn't run in weeks and this was sort of sudden.
I tightened the cap screws at the flange and didn't get much at all.
Anyway, I want to replace that gasket and maybe the O-ring at the waterpump.
How much coolant should I expect to loose or how much should I suck out before I pull the pipe?

I couldn’t say what the science is, but it’s accepted to not resuse coolant.

I think a minimum of a gallon of pre-mixed coolant should be on hand at all times. You might buy a gallon of coolant and a gallon of distilled water, mix both at 50/50, and be ready to clean up whatever’s lost in the process.

I’d also do this job when full-cold and with any positive or negative cooling system pressure relieved so any leaking is minimized.

d/dt F(coolant, clean container ) = 0 + neglible terms

This is the mathematical proof of removing coolant with good practice is ok to first approximation.

I'm certainly not apposed to replacing with fresh but, my shop floor is pretty level and I don't want it all over.
I'm not at all familiar with this complicated coolant system so, I guess I'll suck out about a gallon and see if it leaks.
Then I'll reread that Libby Bong thread.

It's all a Black Hole until seeing the light, pretty much like life, and seems complicated — then isn’t with a little time. It’s really about getting the air out.

Born Milwaukee, raised in Oconomowoc before heading west, so hope you still have your closetful of Bears attire. The dark jersey barely shows coolant when properly worn as a shop apron. Wink

I've seen the flanges get a bit warped over time. Check the pipe flange once you've got it removed from the engine. I've filed them flat again to get rid of stubborn super slow leak from those flanges. even on a newer Stainless Steel version of the upper or lower pipe. Rolling Eyes
New Yellow O-ring at the water pump end of the pipe, and fresh gasket for the block side. Then you should be fine.

I totally agree on this. But, in my scenario where I have upgraded my pressure tank to an aluminum unit with a "modern" pressure cap, well.... even when in the mid 30's F and engine that cold, I still have pressure -- coolant blows out the cap when I open it. Not a lot, but there is a definite amount lost, guaranteed. I do not know if that is a design 'enhancement' or a flaw of how I have mine set up, but I just wanted to make mention in case it sparked thoughts. There is absolutely NO air in my system. Like... ever. Perhaps one more drawback to some genius's inventions..

My guess is that anout 1/2 the coolant capacity will cone out once opened.

You can minimize this by turning off both heater valves and keeping the pressure cap still on tightly.
It will dribble and burp out.

The quicker you work, the less that will come out.

Dave, little chance I'll work fast. Maybe I'll suck out all that I can and replace with new, I want to inspect this pipe thoroughly.
All other pipes and hoses have been replaced, I suspect this one was too.

E1, no Bears paraphernalia, but there might be a Packers hat around somewhere.

Thanks guys!
