Always interesting to see long term updates on cars like this. I should consider making a thread like this about mine. |

Old red is going to need some metal work soon, I fear I will get scope creep though and go too deep but we'll see. Need to reseal the axle flanges and boots soon. Still running like a champ though.

Old red is patiently waiting for the new garage to go up.

that's funny I was trying to recoil it back and never thought about wrapping it around something, I'll do that, I need another set of those heat riser cover
things too but I'll do that when I get a normal muffler back on it, my buddy put this silly empi one on it that doesn't fit right at all

Take the green wire off the coil. Then wrap that wire around a wood pencil or straight sided pen, with each loop tight against the next. Once wound around let the wire loosen from that and slide the writing implement up and out of the now curled wire. Reattach the wire back on the coil. That will help the wire not rub on parts of the engine and make that much less rat nest of a look.
Also get the sealing tin parts to go around the heat riser pipes of the intake manifold at the rear tin. |

Got my distributor back in, points plate was really stuck on the shaft to the point where the advance would stick at max and then it would run like garbage obviously. Still gotta dig out another heat tube clamp. Need to get an non insulated terminal crimper tool to replace a couple colorful ones I've used here and there.

I'll get it ripped apart and unstuck at some point. Good call on the crank pulley I'll measure it but I'm assuming since I didn't change it that it's an early pulley. This engine seems to be a hodge podge of different year stuff. |

You could try applying oil to the dual plates and see if that gets rid of the sticking, or take the advance distributor apart for a good cleaning. Just make sure to mark the shaft to show which way the drive gear goes back on if you do the latter.
VW of Brazil fuel pumps are good for a running engine that is not going to be restored to factory specs.
What size crankshaft pulley do you have? Looks like the smaller single port version that should not be paired with dog house cooling system. _________________ In Stereo, Where Available! |

One step forward and one step backward, got my preheat hose hooked up to my little tube thing on the 3/4 cylinder side but had to put my spare 009 on from my road trip tool bag because the advance plate thing on my 205m distributor was sticking intermittently. Boy do these things drive a lot different (worse) with the 009's.
I thought I had a German square or dome top fuel pump I could rebuild but one was an old USA made unit and the other was a brazilian. Looks like Sparxwerxs has a scratch and dent sale on some
dome tops though.

Set out to replace the front windshield seal and install the chrome trim, ended up getting it roped in on my second try, not bad!

Here's a couple more of this thing from maybe 15-20 years ago until about 2017
One of the many previous owners:
When I got it shortly after the narrowed beam but still on the 5 spokes
Then on some fake sprint stars

Thank you for the recommendation, I have it running on a spare german 009 right now but I want to get the big cap back in as it runs so much better with that obviously.

I buy points from Napa Auto Parts. The Standard brand points are far superior to the Bosch points available today. |

I've never had a thread on old red so I might as well make this one the old red thread.
This is old red, it's a rusty 62 I bought from a friend in about 2016. I fixed a whole bunch of crap on it, drove it around for a while then sold it to a friend in FL after buying my 912. After I got my 912 back on the road and a year or so later my single cab sorted I wanted old red back so I bought it back. It
sat for a while so needed all the usual stuff, brakes, brake lines, fuel tank, carb cleaned etc. When I got it I put a used shockless 6 in narrowed beam and basically set it as low as I could stand to drive it but since buying it back I raised the front and re-indexed the rear and added some poly bump stops. It now clears most things laying in the road and actually rides pretty nice. Yeah I know it's not for everyone.
Here is old red when I removed the 40hp for the generator and doghouse swap
Here is old reds engine prior to the work that apparently messed up the fine balance of grease, filth and who knows how old random parts that made it run so well, I guess.
This is old red at work, taking us to the beach and back. Right after I took the second photo I drove through a flooded section downtown and salt water came in through the holes in the floor pans but promptly drained back out of the same holes. I've counted 7 pieces of pan sections that comprise old reds current floor pans.

I've got a square top pierburg for this thing too but I need to send it to Volksbitz along with two others so Tim can work his magic! |

Those are next on my list, I had a couple of old VW clamps but I've moved recently and they are packed somewhere. Tomorrow I gotta get after this misfire, I have a feeling either the float valve is sticking or there's a plug wire or two that are bad and it's acting up intermittently. These new junk aftermarket clips for the plug wires are really really tight and since I had to take this dan shroud off about 75 times messing with the thermostat flaps I may have messed up the wires. Who knows. It ran fine prior to taking it apart though |

Good job getting that sorted out! Do get hose clamps on both ends of both fresh air tubes to keep those from popping off. Have had that happen and it makes that head on that side run real hot. _________________ In Stereo, Where Available! |
