Hi,
My 1977 181 needs a new steering wheel since the one that i have now is a bit bent.
The diameter of the splines is 17mm and the dish of the steering wheels is a tad over 13cm.

The steering wheel i got now looks like this one

I would like to replace this with a 2 spoke steering wheel like this one

What do I need to look for to get one that fits the 181? Which year beetle could this be sourced from?

Probably easier to find and modify a split window bus steering shaft. I believe Kames did that. or,..... maybe the entire wheel and shaft out of a early (pre 72)

You would need to change the steering shaft
To an earlier one

I always feel a little funny about removing safety features, whether from a car, machine tool, etc.

I would hate it if my very last thought was "gee whiz...I wish I hadn't removed that guard" or (something like that).

As it is, we are hurtling down the road at almost 100 ft./second in a tin box with 5-10 gallons of gasoline on our laps. Danger is our middle names Wink
