Running at 2000 to splash lube the cam in an American OHV V8 is a thing. Since our cam and hydraulic lifters bathe in oil it's not needed. Just seating the rings and normal operation for 400 miles.
I will be putting wheels on the road and running it under load to seat the rings.
Here's a vid of it running just now.

Sounds to me like you may have an exhaust valve that isn't closing, maybe check your valve adjustment again. |

I’ve never fired one of these up after a rebuild, but that’s a lot of valve noise.
Beautiful install, Enjoy. _________________ ‘84 Westy, 2.1L with Digijet, 5.43 R+P, GT Gears

It's not my build, but it sounds lumpy to me too. I'll run a compression test for reference while I have the air box out. Rebuilt AFM arriving today. I'll also move the O2 sensor to the bung away from the tailpipe. I think it's sniffing outside air at idle.
Thanks. _________________ 82 AC vanagon approx 200K miles (3K are mine).

You are the expert and already know a 20 minute “Run-in” is not necessary and only needed on “American OHV V8s.” Why would I share the pages of the Book I suggested you read? I was going to offer you an assortment of gear to experiment with, like I did for Brock but you just don’t listen. You do you. I actually like to be helpful.

You should post your Cam break in procedure in the Performance/engine/transmission forum for validation.
This would be a good one to post in. Report back Brothers procedure too. Would be nice to grab their recommendation as well.
That’s a nice engine you have. Best practices can very but some are better then others.

I have a rebuilt long block from Brothers (1 year old) and when I picked it up they told me it was broken-in. 20 minutes at 2000 rpm to harden the cam lobes. I expect this is their standard procedure.
Hope this helps.

Did Brothers do an initial break-in for 20 minutes before they shipped the crate to you? I gotta think they did. |
I don't think so. It appeared to only have assembly lube. No discoloration to exhaust ports.
I'm breaking it in as if it's not been run. Break-in oil (Driven BR30). Change after 30 minutes of running. Change to normal oil after 400 miles. |
Great information Brian. I called them this afternoon and they confirmed they do a 20 min run-in on each engine even when shipping across country and the owner only thinks it’s necessary on American muscle cars

Thanks Brian. That's good information. Mine was purchased in April 22 and may have sat on their shelf for a while. It's straight stock. Did you get any upgrades?
Xevin. If you want to be helpful, stop asking loaded questions without providing any context. Your book excerpt was helpful. Try opening with that and the suggestion that if not done by the builder, you may want to follow these guidelines.
Today the rebuilt AFM by Fuel Injection Corp arrived before noon. Ordered yesterday from bus depot. $200 plus core. I also moved the AFR meter's O2 sensor away from the tailpipe. This corrected its reading.
It came alive with this and then dialed in nicely. Here's today's video. I think the lumpy exhaust by Vintage speed is by design. It's quieter above idle.

Mine is stock as well. I finally have it running well (except for terrible gas mileage). I learned a ton about the FI system.
Can I ask if you hear a whine from the engine? I didn't hear one in your videos but mine has one and I can't tell what it is. Wondering if another Brothers' engine sounds the same. It doesn't sound like its the belt and it is definitely not in the transaxle because I happens with the clutch depressed. It almost sounds like a straight cut cam (I only recently learned this was a thing) but that is not likely it in a stock engine.
I don't mean to hijack this thread, just a quick yes/no on the whine would be helpful.
Thanks

Thanks! That is a relief to hear. I imagined it might be new gears but I had no real idea if that was reasonable and ok, or if it was cause for alarm.
I am getting about 12 mpg - mostly in town but even on the one long shakedown trip we've taken it was about the same. I have a rebuilt AFM and all FI components have been verified 4X. But, I do NOT trust the new TSII from my experience and all that I've read. Could be that even though it reads within specs. My other suspect is the fuel pressure regulator, which is just 1-2 PSI higher than spec. I don't know if that is enough out to be the cause though.
Anyway, I may start a thread about all that. Sorry to change the subject and thanks for the input .

Yes, it passed smog just fine. I would love it if the mpg got better, but why would you expect that? Thanks. _________________ 1982 2.0L Aircooled Country Homes Camper |

What is your gas mileage? Bread boxes aren't known for not sucking down fuel. |
