This may seem like a crazy made up story to some, but please hang on!

Very recently (last Thursday) this pretty, little L456 colored 1500 showed up in our local classifieds and I was instantly drawn to. Within a few phone calls, I found out that this is a local 2-owner car. First Lady owner (after whom the car is christened) Mrs. Josefine Leiner from Graz, Austria drove it 45k kms from 1963 to 1990, so that’s roughly 1500kms per year. Second Gentleman owner, who I purchased it from, drove it about 5.000 kms in 30 years. That’s a total of 50k kms (roughly 30k miles) in 61 years! Was never driven in salt, and hardly ever in the rain, has always been garaged.

Ruby Red Josephine is all original, no patch panels, no structural rust, 99.99% (!) original paint, og chrome, og interior, still 6V, og hubcaps, 5x og two toned wheels, og lights, original # matching engine, original registration papers.
(The reason I say 99.99% original paint is because I don’t know exactly the amount of paint loss due to polish jobs and we must consider the occasional stone chip touch up. Of course there are several small dings, scratches and wear and tear of 6 decades).

Previous owners both loved and cared for her well (including seat covers, polish, touch up pen, period transistor ignition and more), so it’s really an honor to become the third custodian of such a nice VW 1500.

Always registered, she still drives nicely, but certainly will benefit from a thorough tune up, carb and fuel pump rebuild, brake inspection and another careful polish and detail job, which I am really looking forward to doing this summer.

I am still totally confused of how this happened. I have had a ‘67 Variant before, and love to drive Type 3s. But I am usually rather into early bugs and very early buses. Never thought I’d own a true survivor notchback, let alone a red one! Rolling Eyes Laughing

What happened? Must be love at first sight! Embarassed

pics or it didn't happen.

I will add some additional pics tomorrow ! This is all I have for now. They kept it pretty much og. except for fuel filters and transistor ignition. I am really looking forward to gluing back the og felt insulation, clean/repair the diamond pattern heat shield, properly repair the intake manifold/heat riser and so on. I really would love to keep it as original as I can.

WOW!

Congratulations, that Notch is awesome.

My '63 Squareback doesn't have engine compartment insulation like that, I wonder if that was only used during a short period.

A dream find!
I’m a split bus and early Ghia guy and fell for the type3 too. Nothing wrong with some VW diversity!

Thanx everybody ! Very Happy
It's crazy that I vividly remember seeing a red (this) 1500 in the mid '90s at a small local vintage car show in Eibiswald, near my parents place. Last owner (who lives only a few miles from there) confirmed, that he attended said event. I have to dig through my analog prints and see if I took a pic back then (now 30 years ago). Type 3s are not very common in our area.

It's also interesting, how things snowballed into me purchasing Josephine, because I was originally interested in a late 63, seablue Type 34 razor Karmann project, which I was hesitating to buy because of serious rust issues. I also had to prepare selling my Oval sunroof shell project and another project car (49 Merc) financing the Razor, when the Notchback came up and by coincidence I was literally prepared and in the position to purchase her right away.

Do you mean the felt insulation, Everett ? maybe it's different between notchbacks an d squarebacks?

Here's something, we found this in the front trunk. I wonder if this was a sticker that fell off or was removed from the adjacent area or if they just stuck it in that place incidentally at the factory.

311 is obvious , 24 means... ? it would be around the correct week of the year of production. interesting to note also that Josephine was sold and registered nearly 3 months after approximate production date. I have heard that before in Type 3s. Maybe they didn't sell so well at the time ?

(PS at the first photo above you can see where the first owner taped off the painted edge of the luggage compartment with red electrician tape, so it wouldn't get scratched, same goes for the spare wheel area and inner rear trunk/engine lid edge).

Now that's a beautiful car. Complete and unmolested. You'll never find a better candidate as a survivor like that one. A true "holy grail" of cars. At least now I know what my 65 Notch would have looked like when it was brand new. Wink Cool
