|
|
OK...... odd question.......
I just rebuilt my 90 Automatic transmission.
It works great!
But it leaks gear oil out of the back to back seal weep hole.
I was hoping that I overfilled it so I parked level and pulled the fill plug today.....
No oil came out.
I stuck in my finger and had to bend the finger digit to even touch gear oil.
This is less than 400 miles.
Why is the new seal leaking?
Got me...... 🤷♂️
But it is pissing me off!
The proper fix it to order up some new seals, new gaskets and a new big ORing and fix it right. (Which I will do)
But......
I don't want to do that right now.
I know that the differential vents are not blocked...... I checked them for blockage when the assembly was on the bench.
Would the powers of Hell descend upon me and torment me if I tapped and plugged that weep hole to keep in the oil?
What say you?
What horrors would befall me if I plugged that hole and allowed gear oil to fill that cavity? _________________ Stop Dead Photo Links how to post photos

do NOT plug that hole
it's doing exactly what it's designed to do, alert you there is a problem. blocking it off is just going to cause more issues. _________________

Put a pan under it and keep the function of alerting you to a more serious leak occurring. _________________ .ssS! |

That sucks. I know you’re disappointed. You also come across as a bit of a perfectionist. I doubt you will enjoy driving the van knowing something isn’t correct. I’d say drive it as is for the moment. Ensure the rest of the build is proper. Then plan to address the leak.
Here are my thoughts. It’s actually 2 seals that face back to back. It is not easy to get the cover back on without catching the inner lip. VW had a tool, I would use old microfiche. There is also a large O ring. The pinion shaft seal surface may also not be ideal.
Did you follow the procedure for shimming the two sections? Worse news would be the pinion shaft is moving around. Did you do new bearings and check the turning torque and backlash?
I hate having to redo work while I’m doing it. But you’ll soon forget that you had to go through this fire drill once it’s right. _________________ ☮️ |

You could also use 35mm film negatives to aid installing the new seals. Some of us older members likely have lots of negatives from the old days. I’d probably put a dial indicator on the pinion shaft to ensure there is no side play. Good luck. _________________ ☮️ |

That plan of blocking a weep hole does not even qualify as a band aid fix. Where will the fluid go next is the question? If blocking a weep hole stops a leak, then why was a seal needed? The factory could have saved on not install a seal, and not drilling a weep hole!!!! I think you will simply be wasting your time doing this.
BUT......Keep in mind that a bad seal, may go from a drip to a gusher with no warning, and if you are driving when this happens, well you may destroy your transmission in a matter of minutes. The lip on that seal maybe tearing more everytime the shaft turns. It may get worse as things heat up, it maybe twisted and be thinning as the shaft turns, until it suddenly rips out, and then gusher time!!! You NEED that seal. A blocked weep hole will NOT save you. 400 miles and already perhaps an inch and half low? Id not travel more than moving it around the driveway to get into repair position.
Do you feel lucky, well do you Dave? _________________ Give peace a chance. No American war with Russia! |

Instead of a bolt, how about a hose barb with a return to the pan? _________________ ☮️ |

...anda 12 Volt pump to push it back into the fill plug..
This a analogous to using sandpaper to remove those bilsters from the member you caught in the cat house, when a shot of penicillin is in order. _________________ .ssS! |

That is a tiny frying pan, and very small onions and toast, or is that a huge bolt and barb unions? _________________ Give peace a chance. No American war with Russia! |
