looking around and peeling the head liner found little more. Put a coat of rust treatment on the floor. And went to town on the teardown it went to welding levels so a body shop will be helping me fix the rust.

Found the rust got it mostly stripped steering column and inside door handles and hatch latch working on getting body work done then i will paint it when they get it dry. Going to have to get rear corners d pillars the top hockey stick. Are the non vented ones the same minus the vents? The vent cools the brake lights I dont need brakes i go fast! Can i use any rear pillar on a 71?

The vents on the D pillars are to allow air to exit the cabin giving you better air flow. Mike Fisher or Boo-Koo-Z on here may have the correct good dry sections you need.

Consider going back to the original fuel injection system.

Looks like standard type 3 rust to me. Just a heads up the reason the "D" pillars and roof area in the rear rusted is because VW added foam there starting in 71, which CAUSES the rust. I cut the roof off my 71 Square because it was so bad. My old 70 Square was nice and solid there, so it could only be the foam. You might want to contact Joel out in Oregon to find some pre-70 posts or entire window sections, as they're the same parts thru the years. I'm sure your body shop will find more rust hidden in those areas due to the foam.

The rest is because the drains got blocked in the body stiffening boxes up front (again common on the later cars, 69-on). I'm actually surprised the top front of the fresh air box (the hump in the trunk) isn't rusted thru, as that's very common spot for rust. Same applies to the rust in the curved section in the rear seat area, along the inner fender area (another common rust area).
Sorry to point all of that out, but having owned a few of these cars, I've learned where the normal rust likes to hide.

The rest of the car looks good, and other that the FI being replaced with dual carbs it looks pretty complete. Have fun with it. Cool

Got the motor up on a stand and started the disassembly. Found a earlier roof section for my rusty d pilars, the 3 late model ones I saw 2 were really bad, just like mine or worse, the other had slight blistering on the foam, I was not taking that chance, its ruating inside out. Body shop will do my welding in about a month, ill be working over the engine and starting to sand the body next.

Been kinda busy 😕 but got the flywheel off shop organized and ready for parts cleaning on the motor. Got a rigid dual action variable speed sander, did most of 1 fender for seeing how it will go. That fender had been resprayed 1 time.

I started to clean parts for the motor and teardown has began,, I am not sure yet what will get built, I have no real clue a cc to go for yet. The body shop guy called and is getting close to ready for it. After the welding is done it will be cooler in the garage 😎

I hate to say it, but it looks like someone has been inside it already. Most stock engines stopped getting flat top pistons after 71, and they wouldn't be that clean looking either. I'm guessing you're probably going to find a bearing or something bad inside the case. All of the crud on the outside does bode well for it being taken care of, or a no leaks case either. What condition were the heads in?
The brown Bentley manual will be a big help for inspection purposes, along with putting the car back together again. If you don't already have one, I'd look for one. E-bay is a good choice, along with some of the parts suppliers that advertise on the Samba. It'll quickly pay for itself in just a couple of jobs.

I do have the brown bently and the muir book both. I only got 1 side apart , I will do some measurements and check out the other side. Visually nothing terrible so far, it did run when i bought it, but before it goes back in I want to go thru it for peace of mind. The case may be junk as far as leaking im not sure after I pay the welder I will start calling some machine/engine shop and see if the case is viable or what route will be best.

Just a wild ass guess, but maybe better valve stem seals. Notice how all the pistons have caked on oil on top of them. You'll probably need to have the heads checked over. Note: you can still see the cross hatching in the cylinder in the upper pic (left side).

Yeah, it looks like it's had water sitting in the bottom of it, eating the metal around the drain plug/filter screen. Looking at the pics, someone tore it down and rebuilt it with a mix of new and used parts.

Body shop picked it up today. Getting the rust spots done. I will sand and paint it after some progress I have been stalled on. Probably wont be fast but we are still going till the end slow build indeed

Saw it the other day the roof section was welded it retained the bottom vent. Think I will leave it. Still has more stuff to do bit he says it's gonna finish nicely that's a plus!!

Kind of dumb of them leaving one vent! Rolling Eyes
I'd make them weld them closed.
It would make it 1 of a kind for a squareback.
