Ground clearance, engine removal

I need to remove my engine. Trying to figure out of I have the vertical space to do the work in my carport. I’ll probably be using a jack on casters that is about 8” tall. The answer depends on how much I take off the top of course.

What kind of ground clearance would I need to roll the 2.1l motor out from underneath my 1991 Vanagon?

A 2t floor jack and a couple of jack stands are what I use. Your 8" tall dolly is a little excessive. If height is an issue, use a cherry picker or other hoist device to lower the engine down onto a piece of plywood. Then lift the van up with floor jack until you can slide the motor out on the plywood. I doubt the motor is more than 18" tall...

I swapped engines in mine a few weeks back. I put the back end up on harbor freight ramps, and removed the engine with a motorcycle jack. Rolled out under the rear with JUST a hair's room under the rear sheet metal.

if you strip the top of the long block before you drop the engine, likely you will be doing it anyway, you can get it out without lifting the van at all, l've done it that way a couple of times working in peoples garages.
