It’s noon and I need to get going. Got a late start because Xatie and I had too much fun dorking off this morning. Wish she could have got the time off to copilot.
The plan is Portland to Santa Cruz. Get there when I get there. Hopefully get to Redwoods California area today, then on to SC tomorrow.

No timelines or productivity goals to meet. Just cruise and see where and when I get there.

Enjoy the trip but put your Vanagon in the garage as they seem to get stolen a lot if you follow the Vanagon Forums.

Your spares bag makes me sad. Slip a classic Leatherman 'Wave' Tool on your belt & GO. Leave a spare used alt. belt under the engine lid, of course. YMMV.

That’s right Tom drove a couple hours south on I-5 then I cut over to the coast.

It was 90+ degrees in the Willamette Valley. When I got off the interstate heading towards the coast. The Pertronix module disagreed with the ECU (I suspect) it was a little herky jerky when tapped the throttle under load. It was fine just maintaining speed. When I got to coast where the temperatures cooled down the problem went away. This is the second 76 bus I have had that issue with a Pertronix and the ECU. Both installed by previous owner. The same owner actually.

I-5 in the valley. Very boring

Off the interstate and following the Umpqua River. Very pretty.

So get on to highway 101 and head down to Coos bay. This area is made up of a few small towns or “Hamlets”. It’s a working mans town. Some tough hard working folks I have a ton of respect for.

This area is all famous for Sand Dunes. This is why it’s hard to find 6 rib trans and automatic trans. They love that in the sand rails and buggies. It’s really fun to hire a guide or rent some ATVs.

I would gladly take 110° at sub 20% humidity over 90° with 80+% humidity.

Cruising with the windows down with a damp rag to moisten your skin is as effective as a/c here.

It’s been challenging to post. Poor phone reception and just enjoying some long walks and Clatters family.

Continue down to the Oregon/California border I need to find my place to camp.
I came across this beautiful

As I approached the town of Leggett the temperatures rise to 98* the bus starts to get that intermittent shudder again. Damn its been driving great.

I pull over at this roadside attraction to give the bus a rest.

The Chandelier Tree. I was just a bit to tall to fit so I cheated and backed into it for a photo. Well, the tourists thought it was neat and wanted pictures of the bus. I had 5 families ask me if they could take pictures. All 5 had bus stories.

While at the big tree I swapped the distributor cap. This one looked suspect. I’ve had a shudder with a dirty carbon buildup on the 72 and a cleaning of the cap helped. I’m just troubleshooting slowly. I had a used cap to swap out.

Two hours of driving and the temperatures in Cloverdale are 103*. The bus is running shitty again.
