It’s been a very long time since I did a thread on a car I’m building for myself, I thought this Standard would be a fun opportunity

From what I see it still wears its original equipment,…

Hey Folks thanks for checking it out.

I plan to just do what it takes to get it going. I do not plan to restore it at this time. It has some pretty good rust here and there so I’m going to just have some fun leaving it the way you see it.

I will take out the drive train and replace it with what will get it layed out on the ground.

YeSir

I have a zero miles hopped up 40 hp just sitting around in my garage that I plan to stab in there.

The steering lock/ignition key was frozen but lucky I was able to work the key until it came free

I have these old redline tires to put on the original to the car rims

The beam and trans is nothing to fancy but it’s stuff I already had so I’m going rock it for now.

They are welded so it is definitely a calculated risk

Wanted to share some shots when I got the Beetle. There is something so satisfying about washing a VW that has sat forever…

KLM speedo and the hood with an early prop but the hood still has the hinges that except the springs. Lots of little oddities about this car that I will share along the way.

The mileage is supposedly accurate and has not turned over. I was told the motor runs. I got this car from a friend that purchased it from the Original owner and he told me he is sending me records that indicate this is in fact the original miles on the car. The US born gentleman bought it brand new in Germany when he was stationed there. When he returned to the US he brought the Kar with him.

Finally have some free time to play with the Standard

I’m going to pull this wacky 36 hp set up out and try to make sense of all the unusual tin it took to mix a 36 with 40 tin and heater boxes.

Krazy Kar

Yep…. It’s pretty neat.

I found it to be kinda tricky to get out.

I tried to pull the breast tin to make it easy but the downdraft tube runs through it and looked everywhere for my tool to remove the filler neck with no luck.

I did notice some interesting tin at the heat riser tube to the muffler.

This pulley tin looked odd to me as well.

I can honestly say I know very little about this application, it’s definitely interesting.

I typically consider taking a motor out to be easy but I really did struggle with this one. I was by myself and both top motor mount nuts wanted to spin so I had to get creative to stop that from happening. I also struggled with the heater tube coupler on the driver side ,it was stopping me from coming all the way out to be able to drop the motor. The breast tin was still attached by the downdraft tube so it was giving me grief as well. The heads at the muffler have this very unusual adapter/riser to the muffler, I feel like it’s safe to say that had something to do with the muffler hitting the apron so soon. It took some blood sweat and tears but eventually I got it out with causing any new* noticeable damage, to the car that is. lol

That's the first time I have seen a VW engine give the mechanic the finger!

That "air bag lift" is brilliant. Compact and portable. Thumbs Up

The scratches on your arm are the price you pay for working on a VW.
I paid a high price once installing the dashboard defrost tube.

O snap man

You got it good. I had a picture of my other arm scrapped up too but seeing that I’m glad I saved it and didn’t look weak. Haha.

The motor sure did give me the finger
