Before you condemn the muffler, check your flanges on your heaterboxes. See how the flange is thinner than the muffler's flange? That means it is more likely to be the one that will warp.
If it is warped, stacking up gaskets is not the solution. Getting it flat is. _________________

Do some hammering pre grinding, the morre you can bend back first the less you have to remove. _________________ Rust NEVER sleeps and stock never goes out of style.

Tiny taps. A little bit at a time. Then use a mill file and file across the entire flange in full strokes until it is all shinny and flat.

Heat it and squeeze it with a couple large vice-grips. |

I had this problem w/a "new" (had never been installed) Thunderbird header on my '74. I had to take a couple of flat files to it and repeatedly test fit until it sat flush w/the 2 & 4 exhaust ports, confirmed it had sealed by doing the soap bubbles test, then finally by running it and seeing that the previous leak spots remained free of escaping exhaust residue.
3-4 side's leak pre-fix:
1-2 side header flange filed flat.

Thanks all for the suggestions!
I spent a hour last night removing it and using a large table mounted belt sander to bevel the flange .
The round exhaust pipe just tapped out with a ball peen hammer.
Still when reinstalling it i bolted this side up first and noted the 3&4 side was out about an inch , springing outward .
I guess laying a level across both port surfaces on the muffler , or laying both on a flat surface ( table saw ) will show which is bent .
I ran out of gas for torch will get the tanks replaced in am .
I think a little heat will solve it .
Of course i will be very careful using the torch and
Wear safety glasses .
As well i will have a fire extinguisher handy , just incase . |
