Will this size battery fit a '71 Bay bus? _________________ If you haven't bled on them, you haven't worked on them.

Hey thanks fellow Thomas! Those links told me little of what I need to know, but i appreciate the help very much. My dilemma is that I know Group 42 fits, but most if not all Group 42 are ridiculously expensive for what they are. Consequently I found a site that said they used Group 26R in their Bug, Split bus and Thing. I just figured that out of the hundreds of Bay dudes someone would be using or have tried the Group 26R in a Bay. I am going to buy one tomorrow and try it. If it fits or not I will report back. That way the next poor bastard in my position will know. Group 42 are between 200 and 300 bucks. I can get a 26R for 70 to 100 bucks for a bus I don't use all that much right now. Again, thanks Dodger Tom! _________________ If you haven't bled on them, you haven't worked on them.

If I remember right you can stuff in a H6 ( group 48 ). If you you go to a Group 26 over an H6 you are giving up 25% of your cold cranking amps and may shorten your battery life by half.

more info here, tom.
https://raybuck.com/automotive-battery-dimensions/
the 26r is close in footprint, but taller by about an inch.
mike’s right. cheaper batteries have less power and may have shorter lifespans (as measured by warranties).

Thanks Mike and Tom. I think I’ll just go with the group size 42 then. Edit: 26 R has greater CCA so I changed my mind again…..ha! _________________ If you haven't bled on them, you haven't worked on them.

All the group 42 batteries I see in search results have the + and - posts reversed from what they should be in an early bay. _________________ '67 bug: seized by the authorities

I ended up getting the 26R (R is for reversed posts). If I recall it has 575 CCA and fit the mounting just fine. My bus has been sitting for about 4 or 5 years so I need to tweak my K-dogs, lube up my pedal and throttle cable, put some fresh gas in it and see if she’ll start. Thanks to everyone that chimed in. It was very helpful. _________________ If you haven't bled on them, you haven't worked on them.
