Hello,
I'm unable to determine the linage of my engine. Something tells me it could be a Brazilian.
B45... or 345...
Thank You

No such animal as a B4 series case, and looking closely it appears much more like a 34. Congratulations, it appears you may have a Type 2 "Bastard" engine (or a restamped matched serial 40hp installed to replace the bastard that blew up).

So, as a bastard myself, is there ANY redeeming quality for this bastard in my 69 Beetle other than a paperweight? I would like to throw a fresh top-end kit with DP heads. |

If it runs then it does have some redeeming quality. There still remains the question of whether it is in fact a bastard engine or if it's a later style that's been stamped with that serial number. I mention this because the font style of the number stamps in your case do not look the same to me as what was used by the factory circa 1959-1960. The best way forward would be to do further investigation to verify exactly what you have -- you can start by looking for part numbers on either side of the sump, pull the flywheel and look at the date code stamps of the two case halves, etc.
That aside, if you're wanting to build this engine into a 1600 or larger dual port, then you're better off with a dual relief case. _________________ 1960 Ragtop w/Semaphores "Inga" |

See the pictures below to illustrate the difference in stamp font. Another thing of note, none of the true bastard engine cases I've seen have the cast in bulge in the area below the generator stand pad as shown in your picture -- that area is flat.

To see if it's a true first gen bastard engine ...send a picture of the case behind the flywheel the webbing on the bastard first gen is unique...and also send a picture of the area below the oil sending switch the bastard has extra casting.. bastard cases castings are unique than the 40hp cases some may over look little parts of the case but if known what to look for you can tell forsure it's a true bastard case .... |
