Insurance for Ontario Canada - 1978 VW Westfalia.

Hello,

I’m posting to obtain information to insure my 1978 VW Westfalia.

I live in Ontario Canada. I haven’t been able to find an insurance carrier for the Westfalia.

I’ve owned the Westfalia since 2019, and historically, it had full insurance coverage, not classic vehicle insurance through my current insurance broker.

The insurance carrier Aviva recently notified me in February 2025, they are no longer in the RV insurance business.

I’ve called many insurance brokers.

Classic vehicle carriers won’t insure the vehicle, because they believe the intended purpose of the vehicle is an RV for camping. It's been an arduous process to re-insure the Westfalia.

Any information to find an Ontario insurance broker, or specific insurance carrier in Ontario, would be so much appreciated.

Sorry I don't have one to insure so don't know what to suggest.

Insurance companies these days are getting more and more selective about what they insure. They are into "no risk" insurance which is an oxymoron. If there is no risk why would you insure it?

Anyway, yes we are having trouble getting insurance for our street Buggy and... the wife's right hand drive Golf that she uses for delivering mail. They told her last time that they don't insure RHD cars. We reminded them that they have been for the last 10 years and we have never put in a claim so they renewed it.

Not sure if they will next year...

Yes, the insurance industry is certainly difficult to navigate without a Broker.

I’ve discovered that not all insurance Brokers have access to every insurance carrier, and not many insurance carriers want to insure a 1978 VW Westfalia.

It's taken a lot of phone calls, and a lot of patience - hopefully the squeaky wheel eventually gets the grease.

There are a number of Late Bay Window Westy owners living in Ontario. Maybe do a search for members there and send them a dm to ask who they are using.

I just use ICBC here for regular auto insurance and BCAA for additional value insurance in BC.

Hello, thank-you for the message and information.

I will follow up with that Ontario Westfalia members group.

I contacted a Broker today, and they’re facilitating the intake process with Ontario CAA.

I also found on the forum, an Ontario Westfalia owner received insurance from Desjardins; I’m certain there are insurance carriers that will take care of this Westfalia.

And just like the 1978 Westfalia, I’ll keep going until the insurance destination is found…
