I have always gotten my 1966 bug serviced at VW performance shop. I have recently moved and I'm going to have to do some work myself since there are no shops available. I would like to adjust the valves but I am not certain what the exhaust and intake settings should be.
I live at and elevation of almost 6,000 feet above sea level.
2276 cc motor. EMPI 82mm forged crankshaft, counterweighted, balanced,
w/GM rod journals. Rods EMPI forged H-beams. Lifters Engle. Pushrods CB Performance HD Chromoly(zero lash). CIMA forged 94mm (c/r: 9:5:1). Heads CB Performance 44/37.5 valve size w/dual springs. SCAT Rockers 1:4 ratio.
Camshaft Engle FK-8 straight cut gears. 6.5 quart oil capacity with cooler fan.
Pertronix Flame Thrower distributor (electronic ignition), Flame Thrower coil.
Electronic fuel pump
I need settings for my valves.
Thanks, Wayne |

for most stock motors its .006 thousands for both intake n exhaust . not sure about your motor .
gota find TDC first then turn motor backwards from there for the other 3 . im sure the whole procedure can be found here on the samba . i learned from the idiot book |

On stock engines I have always set both intake and exhaust at .006. the manuals would say .004, but I was told over 50 years ago to use the .006 in, and I have been doing it that way ever since with no problems.. make sure the engine is stone cold when you do it(I always did it after the car was laying overnight).. hand turn the engine to the #1 cylinder position and adjust #1 valves then rotate the crank pulley counterclockwise 180 degrees and do #2 with the same procedure for #3 and 4. The one thing I would check with the folks on the samba is if there is any difference in the setting for a larger displacement non stock engine. Good luck. |

Stock engines have aluminum pushrods wh8ch expand. Performance engines have chromoly which doesn't.

Hmm , i bought a set of push rods from i think it was Car Craft , might have been Save a Bug maybe 30- 40 some odd years ago , had to buy a push rod measuring mock up tool then cut em all to length with a hack saw , hammer on the tips ect some kind of black steel tubes as i recall . put em in an old school 1835 and i have been adjusting at 6 thousands for decades now LOL......... i still have it . maybe they forgot to mention that or i didnt ask .............
is that the only reason to go to loose zero ? isnt loose safer for us amateurs ? ya i can kinda hear em sneeze n snort a bit till warm up .
almost 70 years old n still lots to learn LOL its not my daily driver . |

You have the answer to your question in your own description.
In case you don't know how to set your valve lash to "loose zero": perform the valve adjustment procedure as you normally would but instead of using feeler gauges to set a specific gap, turn the adjuster in until you can't spin the pushrod with your fingers then back the adjuster off just enough that you can once again spin it. Tighten the adjuster nut and recheck that the pushrod can still be spun with your fingers. The adjustment is correct if it has a very slight and smooth drag, with no rattle or clicking if you shake the rocker arm. _________________ 1960 Ragtop w/Semaphores "Inga" |
